We’ll send you updates on this idea

Hi – due to concerns expressed by people who did not like the way the lock symbol was added to protected sheets, we will stop showing it on sheet tabs in Excel for Windows for the time-being. We may bring it back in the future in some other fashion.

If you’d like to see a lock symbol or some other visual indicator when a sheet is protected, please add your vote and comment here.

    Here’s the related discussion – https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921/suggestions/40858108

Many Thanks – Steve [Microsoft Excel]

I and my team very much preferred having the lock icon. Optional would be best, but if that isn't possible we like the lock.

Kevin - you almost got me. Nice trolling.
Now that you are "done discussing" let's just wait in silence to see if MS finds your emotional tirades, strawman arguments, and random ad hominems persuasive.

Kevin - chill, buddy. This request was about what I was seeing on my end in October 2019, which I confirmed to be WAD with MS Support at the time, and I simply showed you that the feature isn't appearing universally which could help you debug your own situation.

Like I said, I agree that this feature should be optional, and I sympathize with people that are now seeing padlocks they don't want to see. I'm simply providing you with additional information - a screenshot to show you that your experience is not universal, and the version of my Excel client so you can compare with your own.

Kevin - it seems we are not having the same experience with Office 2016. My entire team uses Excel 2016, and the whole reason for this request was that the two (Excel 2016 and Excel Online) were not identical, and still are not as far as I can tell. Despite the tabs being locked, with padlocks visible in Excel Online, those same spreadsheets do not have padlocks when opened in Excel 2016. I brought this to the attention of MS support, and they recommended posting a feature request here.

This may be a testament to your general complaints about the quality of MS products and I am not disagreeing with you that they could do a better job, I am simply noting that I put the request in specifically because there was a feature in the online version that I wanted to see added to the offline version, and as far as I can tell that has not happened. Frankly if you are seeing padlocks on your excel sheets in Excel 2016 my accounting team would love to know how you managed it. I'm using Excel 16.0.5026.1000 and I've attached a screenshot (left is Excel 2016, right is Excel Online).

The padlock icon already exists for worksheet tabs on Excel Online, and it is very helpful for quickly assessing which tabs are locked in large files. Please consider adding this functionality to Excel (desktop).

Just a note, Excel Online has a padlock icon on the worksheet tab so you can see which sheets are Protected at a glance. Not sure why this feature isn't in the desktop version.
