Thanks very much for your votes. And to those who took the time to fill in the survey, thank you! This is a brief update to let y’all know that we’ve started work on this feature request along with the one on changing numbers to scientific notation.

Thanks to Graham for starting this conversation. If you would also like Excel to maintain named range references and structured table references in the “applies to” field for Conditional Formatting rules, please add your comments and vote this one up. We will prioritize accordingly.

    Thanks,
    Steve (MS Excel)

Thanks everyone for all of the passion about this suggestion! The number of votes has increased greatly in the last couple months and we’re taking notice! We’ve got a bunch of other Excel endpoints behaving this way already and we’re evaluating getting it done in the Windows versions sooner based on the number of votes it gets – so keep the votes coming!

I cant believe that microsoft hasn't improved this feature in excel. I checked excel online version, it has this feature but to my surprise it only searches the list if first word found in list.

Say if you are searching for "Will Smith",

If you type "will" it will show you the match in dropdown.

    But,

If you type "smi" it will NOT show anything from the list.

I mean this is pathetic. Years of development and still we are looking for ease of entering data. This should be there from the very start.

I strongly suggest to update this feature without any delay, Give that feature via special updates so that every excel user can get benefit.

Search as you type should be there, No need to click that pathetic small arrow after typing few search letters. Also microsoft needs to work for the look of that dropdown arrow sign, it should be visible to old people.

Such small update can make millions of people happy. Dont waste a second for that. Just Do It !
