I voted to give this suggestion visibility. But I have reservations any time there is a chance that Excel will override something I'm trying to do on purpose. Couldn't chart number formats have a "literal mode" (what I've told it) and also a "smart mode" (what Brad is suggesting here)?

There are other weaknesses in the ability to apply number formats to charts. For example, there are not the spinner buttons to increase or decrease decimals that we have in the Format Cells dialog, and the Number group on the Home tab is disabled for charts (WHY? A confusing subset of the Font and Alignment controls on the Home tab are enabled for charts). Also, in the Format Cells dialog, you can insert a line feed into the format by pressing Crtl+J, which is totally undocumented but has been around since the Stone Age. This format is good for displaying month and year, or month and day, on separate lines, and is arguably more useful in a chart than in a cell. However, you can't enter Ctrl+J in the Format Code box in the Format Chart task pane; you can copy a line feed character from somewhere else (NotePad?), but that is seriously tedious.

Thanks for the suggestion and for the support of this feature. If you meant to vote for the Data Form, which is different than VBA UserForms, please change your vote to that suggestion instead. From reading the comments on this one, it seems that some clarification was needed.

I updated the title and description for this one and we’ll continue to monitor for comments and votes.

Here’s the link to the Data Form suggestion – https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304933-excel-for-mac/suggestions/17930662-restore-data-form-functionality

Microsoft has clearly stated in many places that the VB editing capabilities in Mac Excel 2016 are still under development. I don't like the VB Editor in Mac Excel 2011, so I do all my VBA work in Windows, then just use Mac Excel 2011 and 2016 for testing and debugging, and implement any changes needed in Windows.

This is a great idea, and removes the requirement for the user to perform dastardly manipulations of charts and data such as described in https://peltiertech.com/conditional-formatting-of-excel-charts/ and https://peltiertech.com/vba-conditional-formatting-of-charts-by-value/

We should rename this thread "Replace 'Vary Colors by Point' with 'Vary Colors According to User-Defined Rules'".

ArgumentDescription no longer throws an error in recent builds of Excel 2016 for Mac. However, category names are ignored and you must enter a category number, which precludes defining a custom category by name. And in fact, I haven't been able to get my UDFs to appear even in the "All" category.

It is two single clicks, not a double click, that selects a single legend entry. Once selected, the entry can be deleted.

Really? Can't you drag the outlines of the highlighted ranges on the worksheet, when the chart is selected?

When 2007 came out, and Center Across Selection was missing, we complained. They said something like, oh, our data shows now people use merged cells, and by the way, it's too late to change. And nobody ever picked it up for later versions.

Chris Newman (The Spreadsheet Guru) has an add-in that adds a Center Across Selection button to the ribbon; I helped him fine-tune the ribbon XML (https://www.thespreadsheetguru.com/blog/add-center-across-selection-button-to-excel-home-tab).

This would extend the nice date axis formatting of a line chart to the overall more flexible XY Scatter type.
