Imploring you, MS, to stop viewing Excel Online and Excel desktop as the same product. They're absolutely not even close to the same. Unless you're business model is changing Excel's target audience to be hone users interested in making grocery lists and budget sheets.

Excel Online sucks for anyone using it for any reason other than the most basic of basic intent.

SharePoint Online, and by extension, your useless Excel Online (that isn't actually deserving of being called "Excel "), is an absolute nightmare.

Why the **** does collaborative editing STILL NOT EVER WORK when a user chooses to edit Excel in desktop??? When we first migrated to SharePoint and Excel Online, collaboration editing worked for a day in the desktop app. Only that day. In the 2 years since, editing in desktop causes the document to be locked. What the actual??? If I wanted to lock the document, I would check it out FFS.

Again, I implore you figure your sh*t out MS!!. Until then, shut down your "Excel" Online. There is not actual benefit to it. As, that too, locks the document for people that want to edit in desktop version. Or are forced to, since most documents that a business would use are not actually supported in Excel Online.

    Figure it out!!!

@kt: Right??!!! Can't even change the tab name FFS! Uggghhhhhh I hate SharePoint Online. I hate Word Online. I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE Excel Online. I hate that uppn clicking on a link to the doc, any Online version of an application opens in Edit Mode if you have edit access. This then "saves" your NON-EXISTANT changes.

Which screws with your historical governance from an audit perspective.

And since all features that are actually useful are not available in Excel Online, one is forced to open in the app. But doing so to edit, locks the document every single time. So the Collaboration Editing "feature" is not actually available.

Honestly. I hate MS. If and when I run a business, I vow to never ever ever use MS product suite.

    Ugh.

Thanks for allowing me to vent peeps. Lol

@Same and @Tim Sullivan: Exactly!! So much! I know you have different comments but I whole heartedly agree with both of you.

Also, it truly is mind boggling that MS thinks their Excel Online is a viable product. Do people actually use Excel as a home product all that often?? When there are now free programs that can do the same as one would use Excel for, for personal use? I doubt it.

MS: your Excel clients and users are people in business. Excel Online literally excludes all of the most useful functionality that a person using it for business needs. It is embarrassing. Make Excel Online the same as the desktop version or stop focusing on it until you can. It literally hurts my soul. And my brain. And my overall health. In fact your whole "Online" suite is likely to make me have to go on stress leave. Seriously. SharePoint Online, Excel Online, Word Online, every one just introduced a new horror to contend with. Get your sh*t together MS

No. Please DO NOT make row 1 as a freeze pain row by default. For many of us, using row 1 as the start of your data doesn't make sense. Because we have to context the data before the data being presented

No. Please DO NOT make wrap text in a cell as a default. That would be terrible.

People that think this would be good should use another program for their lists and comments

People, PLEASE stop referring to this as a "feature"!! This is not a feature. This is a BASIC business requirement; that was not considered in error.

What we are asking for is for MS to FIX their error. Mich different than a "feature request"

I would like to correct my fellow commentors .. this is not a FEATURE!!! This is an error. A bug. A mistake. Call it whatever tickles your fancy and gets it FIXED ASAP. What. The. Actual. F***?

I need to add an additional comment for all the users that want this to work not only in desktop, but also in Online version. Linking to External Sources will be absolutely useless for online if pivot tables, etc. is not also made possible. Well at least for me. And I presume most businesses.

MS please make sure you not only make it possible for online version, but make the possibility worthwhile by enabling all the other features associated to pulling data!

Just wanted to add that you better NOT make this functionality available to only the online (web) Excel !! This is absolutely REQUIRED for Excel docs that are stored in SharePoint Online (like even more so until you make all Excel app features available in Excel Online

How on earth do you peeps actually manage to make your product offering/suite 100x worse??!! This is legitimately unheard of.

I know you historically have not had actual competitors, but you do now - AND they are winning

Get your priorities and thoughts in order MS!!

David Hawkins: it better be applicable to the Excel 365 desktop! Who cares if it works in the online version if they don't bother to fix all of the other issues with the online version?

Microsoft: if you have to choose between MS 356 Excel desktop and online, I beg you, PLEASE FIX THE DESKTOP!

Can we be clear that we need to be able to link/get data from other excel spreadsheets that are stored online. The issue is not limited to occurring only when you open in Excel Online. Now that my company has moved to Sharepoint Online (SPO), none of my Excel documents stored in SPO can successfully extract data from other Excel documents stored in SPO, when i open in BOTH Excel online AND the Excel desktop app. It absolutely ridiculous to have lost this functionality.

At this point I would even take Excel spreadsheets, that are stored in SharePoint Online, to be able to link to each other only when opened in the app (Excel desktop).

I have tried to do so and all appears great, until I save the documents. Upon opening again, all of my formulas that reference data from another spreadsheet are broken.

This is beyond ridiculous. Fix this. Please. SharePoint Online could be great, but is not as a result.

How the **** does this idea not have the most votes????

Is it because this should really just be considered and viewed as a bug???

@Roy: P.S. I have tried your suggested add-ons but they are all blocked for me just as I thought they would be.

MS: Again, this is not a feature request ; this is an ask to FIX this ridiculous stupidity. Why the **** would it ever be considered intended behaviour for an error advising something is broken to not also include the specifics about what IS BROKEN?????!!!!!!

MS: Also, I hate you for being the only place/area/etc that entices me to use multiple question marks, exclamation marks, and CAPS lock! Truly from the depths of my soul, F-U

@Roy : wow! Thank you so much for your detailed and helpful response!

I presume that the reason that I have not stumbled across your suggested work arounds is because my employer tends to block almost all add-ins that enable "non-standard" features. And rightfully so.

Fundamentally though, should it really be so difficult and unintuitive?

MS : You really need to get your sh*t together. It is absolutely ridiculous that this has been an issue for more than a decade!

Again, thank you so much @Roy for spending your time trying to help me!

I think it is ridiculous that these vague errors (such as "#REF) are given in the first place!!!! Tell me exactly what is wrong and why after I make a change. Also, many of these errors are because Excel formulas continue to get f***** up when there is blank or 0 values. Like seriously. Why the **** does MS make it so ridiculously difficult to know what is not working and/or make it so difficult to work with your existing data without having to creat multiple additional data columns to placate what the Excel formulas don't like (e.g. zero value cells)??????

Sorry for my rant. I'm aware that all of it's not exactly applicable to this feedback suggestion, but I can't help but feel them as intrinsic.

    Many, many, many sighs.

Hi my fellow, frustrated, Excel users... is this issue specific to large number text being converted to number values or would it encompass the overarching bug (in my opinion) that anything that is pasted retains the format value, with no option to just for real, actually, paste as "unformatted text" (the ctrl+alt+v option that exists everywhere else? Also, does this encompass the issue I always have wherein if I insert an additional column in my Excel table, the cells for that added column take the format of the column to the right of it?? I'm probably also an idiot as surely there is a way to add a table column anywhere in an Excel table without it taking on the format of the column to it's right. Isn't there? Please tell me there is a way! AND tell me what that way is. Lol

P.S. I hate Excel. I hate Microsoft. O365 is a joke. I look forward to the day when our companies accept this and move on to better programs.

Dear Anonymous comment on May 22, 2020 07:17pm:

Agreed. However, let's be honest; co-authoring doesn't work at all for excel documents stored in SharePoint online. It ALWAYS gives an error message that the file is locked by another user. ALWAYS. Might as well revert to check in/check out FFS.

To MS: STOP THROWING AWAY ALL YPUR TIME AND EFFORT TO EXCEL ONLINE IF YOU'RE EFFORT IS NOT GOING TO TRULY FIX EXCEL ONLINE IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALLLLLL (YES, ALL!) FEATURES of Excel work online. Honestly, what the actual f*** are you thinking? Why the **** should your users HAVE TO ASK for you to FIX the issue with workbooks stored in SharePoint not being able to link OR READ DATA from other workbooks stored in SharePoint?????

Also, SharePoint, though it doesn't belong in this forum, I just want to say the in general, SharePoint Online SUCKS. Why the **** is it so hard to work with the forms of content types???? Why the **** is it so hard to have cascading columns???? Why the **** is EVERYTHING so completely NON-INTUITIVE????

    UGHHHHH

    End rant.

Also, it is a huge risk that when a doc is opened online by a person that has permission to edit it, it automatically starts saving the doc. What the actual f***???!!! If the person doesn't actually make changes, don't f***ing save the doc as though they did. This eliminates the integrity of the version history FFS!!

Honestly, I would really like to know what you people (are you actually even people or are you just robots pretending to be) are thinking (or why you're actually NOT)!

P.S. I am aware that I am probably reducing my own integrity by my excessive use of exclamation points however, I just can't care anymore. Much like you at MS obviously don't.

Microsoft; please just answer my simple and direct question.

Why do you implement such low value "features " if it inhibits your ability to continue to provide necessary BASICS such as linking to other spreadsheets that are stored in YOUR SharePoint program AND tracking of changes.

To ALL businesses that use Excel the aforementioned CAPABILITITIES are REQUIRED.

Has your target audience changed? If yes, fair enough; but do us all a favour and say so! Honestly. It is beyond ridiculous that we should be asking such questions.
