Good suggestion Frederic – thanks for taking the time to post it. We’ll take a look at the F4 loop and including other functionality like this as soon as we can. We’ll be spending more time on the things with more votes – so folks that really want to see this should keep voting it up.

    Best,

I think a fixed table reference should look like: Table1[$Column1] (or Table1[$[Column 1]] for column names with spaces or punctuation). This would keep the familiar $ sign indicating the fixed reference, and would also reduce the length of the formula as you wouldn't need to duplicate the column name as a range.

Thanks for your support of this suggestion and all the great ideas in the comments. We have at least one improvement planned (resizing the dialogs – see link in the description), and we’re looking at some additional improvements.

If you have specific ideas that aren’t already listed, please add them in a comment.

I would like CF to work properly within Excel tables, so that rules are not duplicated when I add/remove data. This should be done automatically by using table references in the "Applies to" box, but if this is not possible, then could we have a "Merge rules" button or a "Delete duplicate rules" one, so that we just have to tweak it once.

If you actually use "Format as table" you can select Banded Rows in the Table Design tab. Works from v2007 on.

Hi all – thanks for your support for this suggestion.

Improving data validation drop down lists by adding autocomplete is a great idea, as well as supporting structured table references in the data validation Source range.

As Wyn Hopkins has pointed out, DV now at least recognises that table columns expand, so an absolute reference to a range that comprises an entire table column will alter as the table resizes - but why not take it a step further and actually use the structured table reference - it would be less ambiguous.
