Thanks for the suggestion Malcom. We’ll keep an eye on this – we’ll be more deeply investigating things with more votes, so people should up vote this if they like it. I’d also encourage people to chime in on the comments for this one with any specific asks for particular cases/operations they care about more than others.

    Cheers,
    John [MS XL]

Working with Grouped Sheets is a nightmare. Any improvement in this area would be great.

I would like the normal sheet size to be reduced to something more manageable, but still bigger than 256 columns (Excel 2003). A "Database" sheet could then be much larger but should be restricted to having NO FORMULAS. I think that would potentially speed up calculation etc. as these large sheets would not need to be included in the calculation of formulas.

Interesting idea, but not sure how that would work. Using ranges through the sheets dimension has never been very stable and they are tricky to implement and modify.

I suggest the problem with CONCATENATE() and ranges should be posted separately, that would definitely be useful.

I would use such a reporting system, even if there were no bounty. There are some quite serious bugs that have been there for years, and I just learn to work round them because there is no easy to use reporting channel.

Yes, the Mac version automatically sizes most lists that are displayed to fit the width of the widest item, and as many items as will fit on the screen. This was always so even when early Excel was only available on Mac. When it ported to PC a lot of this was lost and things like the Drop Downs for Data Validation do not show more than a few items often needing scrolling, and they depend on the width of the column not the width of the items in the list. Mac version is still heaps better for dialogue lists.

This is just one of many problems with External Links (or Inter-Workbook Links). I know there are other more modern ways of fetching data from workbook to workbook, but Inter-Workbook Links are convenient and powerful. Unfortunately the implementation (storing the whole Path Name for the link) and the way Save As... changes workbook names and breaks links, makes the feature (which has never changed much as far as I can tell), just too dangerous and risky to use. SO, FINDING ALL THE LINKS so they can be checked (and probably removed) is IMPORTANT.

This is a great suggestion, and we want to keep the interest going. Thanks to everyone who has already voted and commented on the suggestion to have an option for the default paste behavior in Excel.

Sorry that we’ve been slow to comment and update the status on this one.

The default for the Paste button is Paste All. This instantly destroys conditional formatting, other formats, and bordering of regions. There are now a good selection of Paste options below the Paste Button and the ability to select any one of these as the "Current Default" would speed up development time considerably. The Paste button image could be changed to show the current default.

The important ones are to have are "Paste Formulas" and "Paste Values". The best (and simpler) implementation, in my opinion, would be to have the Paste button do Paste Formulas with the button image changed to show this and include a "Paste All" option on the button drop down (probably a step too far but I can hope).

Thanks for the suggestion Levi! We’ll be taking a look at this along with some other asks around conditional formatting. It’s a big help to see the things with the most votes, particularly within areas like formatting. So please keep the votes coming for things you want us to do sooner!

    Thanks,

Copy & Paste could do with the ability to change the default to "Formulas" or Values" (and I personally think that the standard default should be "Formulas" as that is what I use most, probably too much to ask). This would help to fix the problem with Conditional Formatting getting mangled by Copy & Paste. I will add this as a separate idea.

Great suggestion, thanks David! And thanks to other people who took the time to clarify/comment on this one. There’s definitely room to tighten this experience up in a number of places. We’re getting a lot of traffic on the site, so please keep voting for the things you care about most to help us do a great job of prioritizing.

    Best,
