Thanks for all of the votes – the team has definitely taken notice of the activity around this issue. We moved to SDI as a result of customer requests, but it looks like we’ve got work to do to really nail the use cases people care about. From a read over the comments, I see a number of cases that we will want to investigate further as we think through MDI vs SDI. We’ll get someone from the team to take a deeper look, and we may reach out to some of you for more clarification as we go. Thanks again for all the voting and passion here!

Thanks for the suggestion! We’re fans of Regex and its ability to parse text too.
If you’d like to see Regex support in Excel, please keep the votes rolling in.

Having regex capabilities would dramatically simplify a lot of the daisy-chaining of M functions or Excel functions I have to string together as well as providing capabilities that I can't even achieve (or don't know how to achieve) with current methods.
I hope that if/when you implement regexs that you consider a flavor that supports positive and negative lookbehinds and lookaheads.

Thank you for your input on Excel’s filepath limit! We have included this feature as part of upcoming work.

I've had an issue the past couple of months where occasionally I'm unable to use the Modern Copy interface in SharePoint online (link here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-SharePoint-Blog/Announcing-File-Copy-Move-for-SharePoint-Modern-Document/ba-p/4884) to copy some spreadsheets over to another library. I get a really lousy and unhelpful error of "1 item wasn't copied". https://www.screencast.com/t/PEc6XaXJaC In finding a Excel 2017 and Excel 2010 article about this limitation I figured, "What the heck? Why not try it?" and lo and behold, by reducing the directory name in SharePoint Online by a few characters, it fixed the issue! I too am shocked that in today's day and age that this is still a limitation. (Literally the file is only 2 folders deep.) It is even trickier to troubleshoot when there is nothing in SharePoint Online to indicate that this was the limitation that was experienced.

I REALLY wish we had this. It would allow me to create reports that are much more valuable and useful to our company. Ultimately, I wish that Hyperlinks would become first-class citizens in the Excel PowerPivot data model as well by allowing calculated columns to use the Hyperlink function.
This is one of those areas where I feel Excel is almost there. Since I believe usage cases are more motivating, I'm including an example of a report I've recently written that can be viewed via the hyperlink below. (I've trimmed it a bit and anonymized the information.) The report shows card records from Trello grouped by the email address of the person for whom we're doing some work. I'm able to do almost everything I want in Excel including using Power Query to dynamically pull the data from Trello via the API, group it together by both Card and Checklist, and give a report for those checklist items that are still due. It's so close to being valuable to people over our current process, however, being able to quickly give the person a hyperlink to click to complete the task is both more readable and actionable than trusting them to copy and paste a URL from the report.

Thanks for logging this one, and thanks to others for voting this up.. We’ve actually had this on our list to get to for some time and have been balancing doing this against other… The more the community helps us rank it higher, the better the signal on overall importance… so, for those that haven’t voted for this but want it, do vote!
