We’ll send you updates on this idea

Good news! We’ve started working on this suggestion, and we’re currently testing the improved scrolling experience in our lab. It will allow you to stop partway through the row or column. The sheet will no longer need to snap to the top and left edge of the cells. Since scrolling is such a fundamental and highly used action in Excel, it may take a while to get it right. We hope to have it ready within a few months, but can’t provide an exact target date just yet. Thanks again for all your support and patience for this long awaited improvement.

We’ll post an update here when we start rolling it out for you to try. It will be made available to Office Insiders first. Here’s how you can join – https://insider.office.com/en-us/join/windows.

    Thanks – Steve [Microsoft Excel]

    WOW
I didn't think I would live to see the day.....
Steve, we've given your team a lot of sh*t, but I want to thank you for the positive update. An eventual fix is better than no fix at all. But still hurry, please!

I highly(!!!) doubt we'll get a release date ahead of the actual release.

Unfortunately, I imagine MS will only implement the fix on future versions of Excel vs including it as a feature update. I'm sure they'll use any means they can to get people to upgrade to the latest version. ($$$)

@Tim - LOL, you must be new around here.

Seriously, though... It's not something we'll ever know. And it will likely be a long time. It took 5 years just for MS to put this on their planning map. Software dev is notoriously slow, and MS makes normal dev times look like ludicrous speed. "They've gone plaid!" ;P

Look above the title of this topic. There's a small blue link for "Excel for Windows (Desktop Application)". Go there and you get a couple sorting options, like "Top", "New" etc. Sorting by Status gives you a good idea of what we're up against, historically.

Futski, if I remember right, the last time this scrolling issue was updated, there was a different MS Excel admin that updated a different topic on the same day.

I still wonder if they forgot about this user forum and today they were like, "Oh, sh!t, we should check on that."

No way!! I never expected to see this happen before I retire! (I'm 36).

It's still possible I retire before this happens, but fingers crossed!!

I was really confused when I saw the new email come in with the word "Planned:" preceding it. Oh, the joy!

Does "MS Windows" have a complaint forum like this excel forum? Perhaps Excel team could be ignoring us because, from what has been discussed here, we know it's an OS scrolling issue. Not an Excel scrolling issue.

The Excel team COULD program in native scrolling logic, but that might be too complicated for them.

Nah, they use Excel for themselves. They just use it on Macs.

Does anyone have contacts with a learning disability advocacy group? I have dyslexia and this poor UX is driving me nuts. It throws my eyes all over the place trying to reacquire where I left off. (As if my job isn't hard enough without Excel causing issues....) Perhaps if we legitimized our complaints through a learning disorder organization, that supports people like myself, we could have a better chance at getting MS to hear our pain and fix it.

(Took me 4 re-reads of this message to edit out the typos and grammatical errors and there's probably still some I didn't find.)

"Studies have been done to show that less than 4% of customers ever formally complain about these type of issues. So almost 78,000 people actually have the same issue" -Clay

I think 100% of Excel users is more than 78,000. ;)

    @ Andrew
I disagree. I use it for 99% default-sized, to slightly modified cell sizes, and it is still frustrating with cell snapping. It's disorienting and terrible UX. This is basic design 101 and MS is failing big time.

Betty, your not wrong, but that is supposedly why this forum is here. So the senior team can listen (well... ignore, in this case) all of us users that have a gripe. This forum was never meant to reach the small devs.

There's only 2 possible explanations. Either MS Excel team WANTS this snap feature for some ungodly reason. Or, there is an insurmountable obstacle in their path. Either way, they need to tell us what it is so we can at least be sympathetic to the technical obstacle, or burn their building down because they actually want snapping cells.

No one wants cell by cell scrolling. Smooth scrolling is, by far, the best universal approach. Cell by cell scrolling can rot in ****. There is a simple solution, but the real problem, is getting the Excel team to implement it.

You can't expect the internet to be that PC. Especially on a topic that is beyond ridiculous, at this point. Plus, you can sanitize at your job all you want, but it doesn't mean you can expect that here. I think this world needs a **** of a lot less PC and more horrible MS Paint comics. The collective 'thin skin' of this society is pathetic. The drawings are pretty tame. Don't be one of the plebes.

Sorry for the excessive email updates. The "Edit" feature on this does not work very well....

Someone with more Office 365 experience tell me if this would work. If you have Office 365 login and can use a web based Excel app:

-Install an android environment on your PC, like Bluestacks
-Log into Office 365 within Bluestacks
    -Launch Excel app
    -Scroll smoothly

Not sure how much resolution can be adjusted on an Android environment on PC. Last time I used Bluestacks on PC was years ago and it made everything look huge on my monitor. But, it's just an idea. Maybe someone that knows more than me can complete this idea in a usable fashion.

What versions of Excel are plagued by this? Is there a newer version that scrolls smoothly? Are we just using old versions that MS doesn't care to fix? Or are we current and MS is just being this evil?

Plus, even working with standard sized cells, I lose track of where I'm at when scrolling because of the jerking screen jumps. It's horrible UX. I still can't fathom how they have allowed this persist for so long. Typical MS.

    1) Yup, that's why we're all here and will forever be in misery.
    2) Excel elites use enter to move cells. Alt+Enter is for adding a new carriage return. Adding new lines within a cell is used far less often so this will not change.
    3) I can see where this could be a toggle option, but it should not be a default. Too much custom data, words and codes in spreadsheet work to have it on by default.
    4) Submit a new suggestion on this website.

Would there not be a registry key to disable "snap to" actions? Excel can obviously scroll smoothly already by dragging the scroll bar or using center mouse button, so I have to imagine something in the Excel programming is forcing it to snap to grid lines.

    1800+ votes and ZERO ACTION

Excel Team, do you know how ****** people have to be to come here and vote? It's not the easiest thing to google search and find this little forum. Think how many people are griping about this UX headache and don't have the time or knowledge to come here and vote this up. Take care of it already!

I can't comprehend how this is even an issue to begin with. You have to know this is ridiculous and unacceptable. Well, maybe you don't. You are part of the company that made the Metro UI. But stil, this is even worse than that....

Mark is spot on. It's a bug. It should NOT exist this way. MS is lazy and has more terribl..., I mean better, products to develop than fix a simple issue that plagues millions.

    HAHAHA
Well put and scary how much I can relate.

Reminds me of when Bungie was developing HALO for the PC. I followed that like a hawk for 3 years before MS bought it and announced it was going to be an XBOX exclusive. I about punched myself I was so upset. Consoles are gaming garbage and FPS games are not meant to be played on thumbstick controllers! My teen years were ruined. (Project Offset was another one. RIP.)

Anyway, this memory, combined with the Windows Metro UI and this Excel issue, makes me want to commit mass genocide and destroy Microsoft forever. MS knows how to disappoint and ***** things up with impeccable resiliency and consistency.

    Where's my whiskey??

I've asked this before, but I'll ask again. Please share this link with your coworkers and social media. Have people come here to vote this up. We're 2nd place right now behind the request of "Python as an Excel scripting language". This is piddly beans compared to that.

Please share and have people come to vote. It's all we can do.

Excel Team, please hurry. This is unbearable scrolling! I cannot keep track of my data while scrolling at all. I lose my place and spend way too much time getting my bearings back after cell snapping.

Not only is this the 3rd highest voted topic, it's the ONLY topic that's not a bug that requires huge amounts of Dev time. This is a simple feature tweak.

MS Excel team - If you read this, and I am wrong, please tell us WHY you're not fixing it. Ex: It's more complicated than we think. It's not a priority. You're using this to force people to new versions or other spreadsheet products (google docs) etc. However you are looking at (or not) this issue, you should tell your users. Especially on a forum like this. Why would you provide a forum and not communicate? This adds to the many other reasons people dislike, or even hate, MicroSoft. Please, start somewhere to improve that image. Start here. Help us reduce our headache frequency and stress. Fix this issue, PLEASE.

Jake, that is not a real work-around. Though that function will allow you to smooth scroll, the scroll bars do the same thing. Once you release the scroll wheel, or scroll bars, it will snap to edge. A true "work-around" would disable the snapping. So far, there is no true work-around.

Everyone, please SHARE this link on social media and any tech forums you are on. Please help get this get some more traction. MS obviously looks at the vote count and reads this poll from time to time. This link needs to spread like a plague and it won't happen if we just wait for google to funnel the occasional vote this way.
