Still not fixed or even recognized by Microsoft.
    You can call it ignored.
    So disruptive!

    UweHa commented  ·

Sorry, Ian. Not even recognized by Microsoft. On any forum.
Maybe they are too busy planning cell frames to fly around when you click cells.

I'm kidding. They don't plan such a thing. THEY ALREADY DID iT!

    Hi Eric Patterson,

    Last July you "fixed" this:
    https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921-excel-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/9735714-maintain-copied-data-on-the-clipboard-even-if-the?page=1&per_page=20&tracking_code=2263df3db982d2cf3fdd1ea1c4c7a595

and caused a major bug in the aftermath.

The new bug is sneaky and corrupts the work.
Especially if you don't know about the bug
    - or when you don't think about the bug and don't check the insert immediately
    - or if the paste procedure is made via VBA. In the latter case you can't undo it with the undo-button, even if you recognize it!!

    Great job, Microsoft.
Bug still not fixed 2 years after posting it here.

And 6 years after being first mentioned in different forums around the web.

    UweHa commented  ·

@ Brian: that has no effect on the above mentioned problem of Excel running amok when another program peeks into the clipboard.

Just tested it and got the bad outcome only when dragging cells around.
Not anymore with Ctr+C or Ctrl+X or the Format Painter.
I don't know since when it is this way, because I have the clipboard surveillance of my telephone program shut off since I identified it as the trigger for this Excel bug.

    Windows 10
MS Office Professional Plus 2016, Ver 1802, Build 9029.2253 click and run

And btw: the wording of the message may have been changed in the meantime. At least they changed the wording several times in the last 5 years without going to the core of the problem.
And at least in the German version it has been changed several times.

    UweHa commented  ·

@ Anonymous: it has NEVER been a "locking". Only Excel thinks - wrongfully - that it was a locking. Because a real locking wouldn't have let through any copied content into the clipboard.
And due to that you wouldn't have been able to paste anything after clicking away the dumb message.
    Does that sound logical?

    UweHa commented  ·

@Roman: it is rarer than rare. It is zero.

    UweHa commented  ·

Over 5 years a bug, and still no fixing.

    UweHa commented  ·

When do you fix this, Microsoft?

    UweHa commented  ·

The clipboard surveillance It is a feature of the telephone program (probably). How can I know about your telephone's features?

Thanks for all of the votes – the team has definitely taken notice of the activity around this issue. We moved to SDI as a result of customer requests, but it looks like we’ve got work to do to really nail the use cases people care about. From a read over the comments, I see a number of cases that we will want to investigate further as we think through MDI vs SDI. We’ll get someone from the team to take a deeper look, and we may reach out to some of you for more clarification as we go. Thanks again for all the voting and passion here!

And not to forget the convenience of distinguishing between Ctrl+Tab (and Ctrl+Shift+Tab) among Excel files (in the same instance) vs. Alt+Tab (and Alt+Shift+Tab) between all open instances of any program without beeing forced to flip through a bunch of open Excel files.

And by this way you could introduce the Ctrl+Tab functionality in Word, which I missed since my start in Word 97.

I speak for the people *working* in Excel. Not for those who paint numbers in little rectangles occasionally.

Nothing to add to Trefor. Especially the part with running a macro.
And of course not only for Excel but at least also for Word.

    UweHa commented  ·

@ Malcolm: so why don't you simply open a second instance if you need it on a second monitor? That was possible without problems without SDI.

@ Anonymous: everything yes, yes, yes!
But you forgot one main issue with the icons: since Office 2007 you only can chose from a collection of 181 (since 2013 only 180) meaningless and interchangeable icons.
Before that you could design your own expressive icons.

Tip: if you move the QAT below the ribbon menu, the icons are colorful (well, what Microsoft thinks it is colorful) in any theme. With the disadvantage to lose even more of your precious workspace.

Thanks everyone for all of the passion about this suggestion! The number of votes has increased greatly in the last couple months and we’re taking notice! We’ve got a bunch of other Excel endpoints behaving this way already and we’re evaluating getting it done in the Windows versions sooner based on the number of votes it gets – so keep the votes coming!

    Please DON'T FIX this!

    Last July you "fixed" this:
    https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921-excel-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/9735714-maintain-copied-data-on-the-clipboard-even-if-the?page=1&per_page=20&tracking_code=2263df3db982d2cf3fdd1ea1c4c7a595

and caused a major bug in the aftermath.
And the "fixed" one wasn't even a bug, but a minor inconvenience.
And you never looked back to pay attention to the comments and impacts regarding disrupted work.

And this here is also rather an inconvenience because you see it and can react by zooming.
The one you caused is sneaky and corrupts the work.Especially if you don't know about the bug or if the paste procedure is made via VBA. In the latter case you can't even undo it if you recognize it!!

Your problem can be settled with a quite uncomplicated workaround. I implement it by default in any of my lookups:

    IF (VLOOKUP (...)="" ; "" ; VLOOKUP (...))
