When you write a script for Excel desktop it would need to save that script online in your Personal OneDrive. So, there would have to be an internet connection there otherwise you would not be able to save the workbook. Office Scripts are not attached to workbooks unlike VBA scripts ,Office Scripts are separate files. So, as far as I can see that problem has to be over come before enabling your idea.

You can, already, track the history of your online workbooks using SharePoint Online (in your OneDrive).

    Hello everyone,
Thanks for submitting this idea and voting for it.
We need more information for better understanding of this request.
Sheet tabs should not “jump around”, unless someone is reordering them.
Is it a bug or a feature request? Is it still relevant?
Any additional information will help us prioritize and handle this issue.

    Thanks,
    Itai from Microsoft

As far as I know the Tabs do not jump around. When a particular object is selected in a worksheet then it contextual menu appears. This is, what I think you mean when you say "jumping around".

Excel for web doesn’t support VBA or macros. There is however a new scripting option if you are looking to automate your solution. Office Scripts is a new offering we released in public preview earlier this year. It offers recording and scripting capabilities based on TypeScript/JavaScript languages. Please check out https://aka.ms/office-scripts for details.

Office Scripts doesn’t yet allow shape based triggers. It is something that is of interest to us. Could you please provide some details how how you wish to use this in Excel for web?

If you have any questions, please reply back to this email.

    Thank you,

Office native platforms already supports JavaScript/TypeScript for the add-in (extensions) model. The built-in Office Scripts/automation is not yet supported.

We do intend to support Office Scripts across other platforms and hosts. However, the priority and schedules for such expansion in coverage is not yet finalized. We are right now focussed on delivering it for Online platform with Power Automation support. Please stay tuned for future announcements to learn about the coverage.

    Thanks,
    Sudhi
