Great suggestion – thanks again for taking the time to put it on this site and for the thoughtful followup comments. This is pretty related to some other work we’ve got going and already has a fair number of votes, so we’ll work on getting plans in place now and hope to get started on this soon.
Thanks,

I agree with Kenneth Barber. Tables are for raw data and the occasional filtering/sorting. Pivot tables are for analysing and summarizing raw data.

A workaround could be to place the additional information above the header row without being part of the table.
The underlying problem is that a table needs individual headers (no duplicates). If formulas would be allowed there is no way to guarantee individual headers. -

I guess your having sheet references in the formula referring to the same sheet the formula is on. Remove these sheet references and sorting will work properly.

Maybe it would be better to automatically resize the item list depending on the width/length of the entries and the amount space to the right/bottom of the screen. -

You could easily set up a pivot table with the count of item.
And I suppose it would take some time to calculate the count each time you open the filter dropdown. Longer lists will take more time. -

You mean like "Totals" in "Quick Analysis"?
