I've only had Office 365 for two days now and this has quickly become a hindrance for not only myself but everybody in my office. Excel is opening new workbooks but they really aren't in separate instances. This is why you can copy tabs freely between workbooks and why when you calculate a data intensive formula in one workbook, all workbooks are frozen calculating the same thing, essentially blocking you from working in other workbooks until the function is completed. I have this problem daily and the end result is always Excel first not saving my workbooks, then workbooks turning to solid gray screens, then windows errors telling me there is not enough memory to complete the function - even if it's just trying to close a tab or close the workbook. I have to force close through task manager and reboot my computer. Even after all Excel workbooks are closed, task manager still shows one instance of Excel using over 1GB of RAM. I have a brand new machine with plenty of processing power and 8GB of RAM. This is a known issue and to be blunt, is completely unacceptable from an end-user perspective. Microsoft has cornered and monopolized the office software market and for the amount of money paid out for licensing to Microsoft this should be at the top of the list of bug fixes.

It takes me less time to reboot my machine than it does to escape the domino effect of errors resulting from this bug to even be able to restart. I give this 3 of my remaining 4 votes.

Yes this is a senseless departure from a key functionality I used all day every day prior to upgrading from Excel 2010 to 2016. I have over 6 workbooks open at any given time and this was a feature I relied on heavily for financial analysis. I give this my 3 vote maximum. This thread needs to be bumped for visibility.

=IF(cell,"value if true","value if false") should work for you.

For cells that are either blank or have a date value I use this formula:
=IF(A2,"Closed","Not Closed"). Therefore, if cell A2 has a date value, it returns the result Closed. If cell A2 is empty, it returns the result Not Closed. Very quick calculation - takes a matter of seconds to calculate over 130,000 rows.

I imagine you could achieve the same result by using the same formula, but changing A2 to A2=0.

This is a critical functionality that needs to be added back into Excel 2016 (as well as future releases). Every morning I begin by filtering a single column to show duplicate values only for > 130,000 rows. Even though this is only one column wide, it takes 20 minutes to process. While this processes, I am unable to work in other instances of Excel - they are all busy processing the function for the non-active workbook. 20+ minutes of down-time every morning is not productive in business when there are deadlines to meet.
