We’ll send you updates on this idea

Hi – due to concerns expressed by people who did not like the way the lock symbol was added to protected sheets, we will stop showing it on sheet tabs in Excel for Windows for the time-being. We may bring it back in the future in some other fashion.

If you’d like to see a lock symbol or some other visual indicator when a sheet is protected, please add your vote and comment here.

    Here’s the related discussion – https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921/suggestions/40858108

Many Thanks – Steve [Microsoft Excel]

Thank you sooo much for fixing this Steve.

For those wanting to ensure there templates are locked: why not use a simple stand alone macro that locks all tabs in the active workbook that start with # as the first character?

We’ll send you updates on this idea

Hi All, We apologize for being slow to engage on this thread. We are listening to your feedback and we really do care. After reading the comments here as well as the feedback sent from within Excel, we have decided to remove the lock icon from Excel on Windows for the timebeing. Since it’s not new to the other platforms (web, Mac and mobile) and we haven’t had similar feedback about it there, we won’t change those for now. We’ll consider how best to get consistency across the desktop, web, and mobile apps, and we’ll share updates if we have any additional next steps.

Since the lock icon was added recently, we can turn it off by using a configuration in O365, so you should notice that the change soon, without having to install an update. Just make sure to restart Excel.

    Thanks for all your feedback.

    Steve [Microsoft Excel]

I tried the "send feedback" option already about a week ago. Same fantastic response that we are getting here.

So in terms of number of votes, this dreadful "improvement" is number 54 out of 6890 ideas on UserVoice. I have to ask myself, is Microsoft so embarrassed about this they can't even make the effort to at least post a comment in spite of where it is in the ranking. Shame on you.
