    Covering the selected cells by the top left cell, without merging the content, is NOT merging the cells.

    Exactly. Instead of just covering the selected cells with the top left cell.

    Excel has a merge function in name only.
    Instead of merging the cells selected, it extends the top left cell to cover the selected cells.
    A real merge function would combine the content of the selected cells, as does openoffice and libreoffice

    Indeed. The so-called merge function of Excel just extends the size of the top left cell, without merging the content of the selected cells.
    Both openoffice and libreoffice really merge cells.

    Currently no function really merges cells ... it just extends the size of the top left cell.
    A real merge would combine the values of the cells involved, as does openoffice and libreoffice (since a long time).
