When quitting Excel, Word, or PowerPoint, and then reopening them (or restarting my Mac), none of them will reopen the previously open documents. Unchecking the option Close windows when quitting app in the General tab of Mac System Preferences, the Office 2019 for Mac doesn’t reopen the files that are previously opened either. This was never a problem before, but this new feature seriously interrupts my work flow. Please restore the functionality that made it possible for documents to automatically reopen upon restart. I hate trying to remember what I was working on and dig through stored files to reopen my documents.
This issue has been a problem since Office 2016, when the feature was either broken or intentionally removed. It is CRITICAL to many people's workflow - myself included - and it's incredible to me that after 5+ years, MS has neither acknowledged it, or done anything to fix it. COME ON, Microsoft - FIGURE THIS OUT.

This has been a problem with Office for years (there are other reports of this problem here). Other Mac programs are able to do this, and Office apps used to do it, so I don't understand why this functionality was removed. It's more than just an inconvenience. It's enough to make me consider switching to a different suite of apps, and I've been using Office for decades.
I just tried but doesn't really works as intended. In fact, it shows last opened and not last closed files, and with time, and many files open/close, I loose track of files ... This is pretty much similar to option Home --> Recent files from Office 2019, but again, the listing is done based on Last Open time, and not Last closed time, which would have been more logical ... :-/
I agree not having this simple function on Mac stinks. A workaround on Mac would be:
Open 'Finder' --> open 'Recents' folder located on the sidebar at left [if you don't see the sidebar go to Finder->View Tab (on top left) -> View Sidebar] --> then sort all the files by 'Kind' *(ie click the column with the label 'kind' on top*) --> this should combine all your most recent word files together for you to review/open.
[*Note: If you don't see the 'kind' label/column then go to Finder -> View Tab on top left -> click 'Show View Options' -> make sure 'kind' is checked.]
I hope this helps!
the same problem here, in all mac office application :-( its really boring.
Same problem for me. Had to move to last Mac OS and Office 2011 seems not compatibme with Catalina OS. So I had to switch to Office 2019 and what a bad surprise this reopen previous session files ... :-(
Can this be fixed pls Office!?
Or at least tell what Macro to use here!? Seems that "Return to last editing location" Macro works in Word, so maybe there is also a reopen all closed file macro as well?
