Certain items, especially income, need splitting; in order to accurately separate expenses like withholding for taxes or healthcare premiums.
How, exactly, does Excel seem to be letting you down?
Paychecks do contain elements that need to be allocated to account headings and I suggest that's in no way Excel's problem.
Dedicated accounting packages not only offer to but insist that you split payments. That's not what Excel is for, unless you modify it to meet those requirements.
A major part of the reason spreadsheets - including Excel - exist is that way above and beyond ordinary accounting functions they allow you to manipulate data to your heart's content.
What would your heart be content with?
IMO - this is a critical feature. A paycheck contains multiple elements that need to be allocated to a variety of accounts (401k, health insurance, taxes, income, etc)
