Remove Cap on File Path Length - We Shouldn't Have to Move Files to Save Them
A limit on the length of a file name is fine, but limiting the file path length means that if your life is complicated by folders within folders then you regularly have to move around folders just to save documents in Excel. This is very tedious and creates new possibilities for error while working.
The only disagreement I have with R. Summers is the word "fine" to apply to the existing limit. It isn't fine. The existing limit is a needless nuisance. My workaround is to have special folders near the top level of my computers, for the sole purpose of reducing path length, and use shortcuts (when on Windows) and aliases (when on Mac) so I can find the files when I look in the folder where the files would be, except for this limitation of Excel. (My Mac is ancient & for all I know, Excel might now be free of this nuisance on the Mac. But this issue persists now, with Excel for Office version 1910, on a computer with Windows 10, version 1903.)
Thanks for the note. I'm going to go ahead and remove the aside (aside: we do care), since we try to keep the site positive.
