  1. Proper compatibility with 2011, scaling and sizes all over the place

Each time I open a 2011 file in 2016 the cell and page sizes are all wrong and previously well presented documents look terrible. Each time I open it I have to waste time resizing everything to work in 2016

Thanks for all your comments and votes supporting this suggestion. There are some differences which have been introduced so that Excel for Mac can align closer with Excel for Windows, so in some cases you will need to adjust your documents. One reason for the differences is how Excel determines the column width in your spreadsheets, which you can read more about here – https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/214123/description-of-how-column-widths-are-determined-in-excel.

Thanks – Steve K [MS Excel]

  2. default workbook

Please tell us where (and how, if necessary) we can change the default workbook.

If that is not currently accessible to users, please add it.

I have tried to create my own default workbook in the Templates and Startup folders, both with and without a file extension, but all to no avail.

Word allows us to create our own Normal.dotm in the Templates folder and that gets used for word defaults. Be nice if Excel did it in a similar way.

  3. Maintain copied data on the clipboard even if the "dancing ants" aren't shown around the copied range

I understand that the clipboard can use A lot of memory, but It is sooo frustrating having to re copy everything because I accidently clicked in the wrong cell before pasting.

The clipboard is now persistent in some cases where it would have been cleared in the past. For example, if you copy some cells, and then insert a new sheet, you can paste the copied cells. In the past, the clipboard would have been cleared when you inserted the new sheet.

  4. Introduce an equivalent to F2 on PC to edit and F4 to make cell references absolute

Introduce a shortcut to make cell references absolute like F4 on PC version (F2 edit equivalent would be helpful too)

If a function key doesn’t work as you expect it to, press the FN key in addition to the function key. If you don’t want to press the FN key each time, you can change your Apple system preferences:

Go to Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard.

On the Keyboard tab, select the check box for Use all F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys.

    Cheers,

  5. Include PivotCharts as a feature for Excel for Mac.

This feature has been available for Windows users for years. I have Excel 2011 and just can't see the value of upgrading without this feature (as it is, I already have to use a Windows version of Excel to do data analysis).

  6. Show scroll bars all the time

I will appreciate the possibility to have the horizontal and vertical scroll bars show all the time

    Greetings,

We’ve fixed this issue as of 15.15, and scrollbar visibility should now be respected.

    Enjoy!

  7. Bring back parentheses in Accounting number format

Bring back parentheses for negatives in Accounting number format. These were lost in Excel Mac 2011. They're a common standard.

    Hi everyone,
This has been fixed for a while now, and the root cause was actually a change in OS X’s handling of number formats. If you update to OS X version 10.11 or higher, and a sufficiently recent version of Excel 2016 for Mac (15.10 or higher) you will see these restored.

Julie – if you are unable to update your OS or version of Excel, you should be able to use the following custom format code to add parentheses to for negative formatting.
    #,##0_);(#,##0)

    Cheers,
    Dan [MS]

  9. Allow Toolbar / Ribbon customization

the possibility to customize the toolbar or ribbon and adding custom buttons that start macros is vital for a efficient workflow when processing big amount of data tables.

Great news, with Mac Excel 15.23 you can now customize the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) and Ribbon. This version started rolling out on June 14th, so look for an update if you don’t have it already.

  10. 64-bit Version

Please release a 64-bit version of Office 2016 for Mac. Please. I have to have a Windows partition on my Mac just so I can boot into Windows and use Office 2013 64-bit. The workbooks I encounter are often 800,000+ lines and nothing Microsoft could do would make me happier than releasing a 64-bit version of Office 2016 for Mac. Please.

Hi all – this is a few months late, so many of you may already be aware, but the 64-bit version of Mac Office was released in Sept. 2016. Thanks for your support and keep talking on UserVoice. We are paying attention, despite the slow update on this issue.

    Thanks,

  11. Deselect Cells While Keeping Other Cells Selected

I would like to be able to deselect cells without having to cancel my whole selection and start over again selecting cells in order to make sure I do not select the offending cell.

Numbers for mac has this functionality. You can hold down the "Command" key to select non-contiguous cells and then if you make a mistake and want to deselect a cell, you just click on the offending cell while still holding down the "Command" key. I really would like to see this ability come to Excel.

You can now deselect cells in Excel for Mac version 16.×. This is only for O365 subscribers. To update to version 16, go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates.

To deselect, you can CMD+Click on selected cells. CMD+Click again to reselect.

Thanks – Steve K [MS Excel]

  12. Support for right to left languages

We are tired of waiting for a real multilingual Office package for Mac. Please bring right to left languages support to Office

    Hi all,

As of Mac Excel 15.20, we now support RTL languages – Hebrew and Arabic. We’ll also be adding Thai in the next several months.

As such, I’m marking this as completed.

    Cheers,
    Dan [MS]

  13. Bring back keyboard shortcut customization

Believe it or not, what the vast majority of Mac users of Office are looking for is not compatibility with Windows versions of the software, though keeping the features up to date is nice. After having been able to customize keyboard shortcuts for (how many?) years, we are told that Mother Microsoft thinks its better for us to use Windows Control shortcuts that don't do the job we're used to being able to do. Why would you want to make the software less useful?

I believe this represents a small software development savings relative to the number of customers it…
