  1. Be able to protect Power Pivot data model and measures with password

When you create a data model and measures in PowerPivot with PRO versions, users can modify and edit both.

Users and customers that have no idea on how the model has been build can make a lot of damage and dysfunction.

As well as VBA has it would be very interesting that Power Pivot has the option to be able to protect data model and measures with a password.

Thank you for suggesting this feature, but this is not something we’re likely to implement anytime soon. The reality is that this sort of feature only helps to keep honest folks honest, and doesn’t provide true security, because anyone with permission to a workbook can modify that workbook. For scenarios where the database really needs to be securely maintained, a better answer is to deploy the data model to either an Analysis Services server or to Power BI. By doing that, the data model (an AS tabular database) will be maintained independently of the workbook, and users will be able to connect to the database and query it from their Excel PivotTables but will not be able to modify it.

  2. Allow the option to list pinned files either alphabetically or by recent use.

Excel 2016 switched the order of the pinned files from alphabetical to most recently used. IMHO, that was a big improvement. Apparent;y that change has been reversed.

Pre-2016 I only pinned 4 of 5 files that were hard to find or only used monthly. Files I used Daily I pulled from the recently used files.

In 2016 I switched to pinning about 20 files. The ones I used daily or weekly are always near the top. The ones I use monthly are farther down but easier to find than going to the various directories.

For me, going back to the…

  4. Break link from source data to pivot table

At present you cannot send the output of a pivot table without the link to the underlying data - but often I want to do exactly that - share the results without sharing the base data.
Cutting and pasting the pivot table works but loses all the careful formatting (actually worked much better up to Excel 2010, now entirely broken).
So please can we have a method of preserving the output from pivot tables but delinking them from the source?

If we break the link to the data, the PivotTable will no longer be interactive and won’t support expand/collapse, filtering, or sorting. Copy/Paste into Paint or any other graphics program will preserve an exact picture of the PivotTable with all formatting. In any event, this item isn’t likely to be addressed soon.

  5. PowerPivot Calculated Tables

Please bring Calculated Table feature from Power BI into the Excel Data Model. It is very useful to create intermediary tables from DAX calculations and link those tables into the data model.

We agree that this feature would be useful for many users. The difficulty is that adding this feature would break compatibility for existing Excel users, Data models with this feature would not run in Excel 2013, 2016, or 2019. At this time, we consider compatibility to be more important than this particular feature. At some point in the future we expect to find a way to deal with this compatibility issue, but we won’t be able to address this anytime soon.

  6. Make Undo stacks track per workbook instead of globally

Undo stacks are currently global between all workbooks that are open at a given time, so pressing undo on one workbook might undo a change in a different workbook. As someone who frequently has multiple workbooks open at a time, it would be much more helpful to be able to step through the edits made on each individual workbook.

Thanks to everyone for the votes and discussion about having undo independently in each workbook. Even though this request has been here for a long time, we are listening and we realize that it can be frustrating if you press Undo while you’re in one workbook and it undoes something in another workbook. We’ve been considering the technical challenges to make Undo work “per workbook”, and want to share some details about it with you.

The undo process relies on the state of all open workbooks being exactly the same after an “undo” as they were before the undone action was taken. One example of how undo “per workbook” is problematic is with linked workbooks. Let’s say you have WorkbookA, with a formula that refers to WorkbookB, such as =SUMIFS. This formula will give the sum of values in WorkbookB in range A1:A10 that have “Yes” in the…

  7. Conditional formatting - Apply to named ranges

Currently if you apply conditional formatting to a named range (i.e.. a range named via the Name Manager or a table style named-range), the value in the "Applies to" column of the Condidtional Formatting Rules Manger will revert the named range to its absolute cell reference.

eg. "Applies to: =Table1[Column3]" becomes "Applies to: =$C$2:$C$7".

Apart from being more difficult to read, it creates other complexities. e.g. if I happen to copy/paste a cell into this range, it creates a mess in the rules manager, creating a new rule for each cell pasted.

e.g. if my named range is 'Table1[Column3]' which…

Thanks for supporting this feature. We won’t be able to offer this in the near future, but we understand that it would be a nice improvement. Even though it seems like a straightforward idea, it is quite complex. Old versions of Excel will not support the new behavior, so there would need to be some hybrid approach that will be suitable for old and new versions. Also, named ranges can be dynamic, meaning that the range might change and conditional formatting rules would have to be adjusted when the workbook is calculated. There are lots of cases to consider and deal with properly.

We’ll continue tracking votes for this suggestion.

  8. Fill Handle For Worksheet Copy

If I have a worksheet called January and I Ctrl+Drag that sheet to make a copy, Excel should automatically call it February. Use the same logic as the Fill Handle (support months, weekdays, and any custom list).

Thank you for taking your time to suggest and vote for the “fill handle for worksheet copy”. While this is a good suggestion, we are not likely to be able to devote time to it in the near future. We’ll continue tracking the votes for this, though.

  9. Display Status Bar of Inactive Window 2016 Excel

In Excel 2010 we were able to highlight numbers and have their sums displayed in the grey status bar towards the bottom of the sheet. Working with 2 monitors, this feature was very helpful.

After upgrading to Excel 2016 the status bar of the non active/selected workbook disappears instead of the sum being viewable of the non active workbook.

The feature was helpful for at least 2 open excel instances where we can view the sum of the non active workbook and it would be great to have back instead of being forced to click in out of each workbook…

  10. Enable Merged Cell Sorting

For rows or columns that contain merged cells, all rows or columns associated with the merged cells should be treated and sorted as 1 row or column.

  12. Link the min and max values of a chart axis to cell value

  13. Allow users to control the order of items in the sunburst chart.

I'm using a sunburst chart to convey status, and visually it would be nice to have the chart in the same order as the items I want to talk about them, so the discussion flows clockwise around the wheel. Having an option for the layout to follow the order in the excel list would be wonderful

  14. Give us a proper NULL() worksheet function.

This would make calculations and charts treat a cell containing a formula as a blank cell, not as a cell with a text string ("") or as a zero.

Thanks for your support for this suggestion. As some of the comments have concluded, there are a few complex technical issues and considerations that have delayed this from being implemented.

We do think that this suggestion has merit but we don’t think that we’ll be able to devote time to it in the near future.

One of the primary reasons for this request was to have a better way to handle formula cells in line charts, and this can be accomplished using the option to show #N/A as an empty cell. You can use the NA() function in your formulas as appropriate, and choose the option to “Show cells with #N/A as an empty cell”. To find the option for your chart, go to the Select Data dialog for the chart, and click the Hidden and Empty Cells button.

We know there are other scenarios where a proper NULL()…

  15. IP Address as a datatype.

I would love to see IP Addresses added as a format option and functions added for validation of the IP addresses..

    For instance InSubnet(Network as IP,Netmask as Integer,address as IP) to determine if an IP is within a Subnet;

Being able to do addition/subtraction on the field would be awesome as well!

Thanks for supporting this suggestion with your votes. Supporting IP addresses natively is not currently planned but we will continue evaluating it for future investments against other competing requests. Please keep the votes rolling in to help us prioritize in future.

While not available, potential future support for custom data types might also enable this scenario.

  16. Embed 3D maps in worksheets

Add the ability to embed 3D maps within an excel sheet. If you are making an excel-based dashboard, it would be great to have the capability to showcase the map right within the sheet instead of as a pop-out visual.

  17. Excel Pivot Tables Auto Time Grouping by Week

In Excel 2016 you can only group by day, month, quarter or year. Please add the ability to group by weeks or re-add the capability to group by number of days for pivot table data.

The best way to accomplish this is to add a column to your data that specifies the week. By using a custom formula, you can organize the weeks any way you want, with any starting day of the week, and also name them any way you want, whether “Week of July 10” or “Week 34” or something else. Then you can use that column in a PivotTable to see data grouped by week.

  18. Remember the chart type, chart formatting (and template) on Pivot Charts

When you're charting a pivot table and have a combo chart - say stacked bar chart with a line chart - and you filter your pivot table so that one of the stacked bar elements disappears, the chart replaces the missing element from the line chart. Remove the filter and your line chart is still part of the stacked bar chart.

I'd like the pivot chart elements to remain in their place even when there's nothing to show because of the filter.

Additionally, any formatting applied via Chart Templates to Pivot Charts is lost on Pivoting, etc. - this formatting…

  19. Rotate sunburst chart (& other controls)

LOVE THE NEW SUNBURST. Great work, guys - please keep it up. Would like ability to rotate the sunburst chart (just like we can with the regular pie chart) and have much more control over the final product, such as: ability to turn visibility on or off for any segment (sometimes really important segments are not labelled because they are relatively small - please give us control), more control over colors of segments and sub-segments, better font size & text rotation of labels, more data label options such as pop-out / data callout and other options found on pie chart.

  20. Conditional formatting in charts

Add Conditional formatting in charts to control the colour of e.g. a bar or line, depending on the value or content of the data labels. Green if appels, Yellow if bananas and so on.
