  1. vlookup returns formatting of target cell not just data within target cell

Vlookup currently returns only array data within a looked up cell only into my target cell. I require any cell formatting found in the looked up cell such as colour fill to be returned in the vlookup function to the target cell. If the vlookup did this automatically rather than me having to then create conditional formatting rules for each variable of data returned from the array after vlookup has completed its job returning the data from my array into my workbook it would make the vlookup tool much more powerful.

  2. Unique Filtering Bug Excel 2013 (extremely slow)

This is still a problem even with the latest Excel updates.

    I have 2 columns, with 175,000 lines.

    • Column A contains a 5 digit number.

    • Column B contains a value (between -50 and 100).

    Steps to reproduce:

    1) I have cleared all filters, formats, and there are no extra rows / columns on the sheet.

    2) I select Column A and Column B.

    3) I click "Advanced Filter".

    4) I click "Criteria" text entry.

    5) I select Column A.

    6) I select "Unique Records Only".

    Result:

I then see windows blinking open and closing in Excel, while it takes up…

  3. Combine cells, increase command utility

COMBINING CELLS should offer the possibility of displaying in the new block only the contents of the first cell or the concatenated contents of all cells, without deleting the actual contents of each cell, which will be shown again when the block is undone. This would greatly enhance the performance of the command.

  4. Background colors for ribbon and QA toolbar

The QA toolbar and the Ribbon need separate color controls. The themes wipe out all of the colors normally on each icon making them all look the same and hard to distinguish. Only fixable with the White theme but then the ribbon runs into the rest of the document. Needs a contrast!

  6. Speed up lag

Keyboard input lag on the newest versions of excel (including 2013) is extreme. Business and power users value speed above flashy looks. Please bring back the snappiness of the old versions.

  7. Please allow users to move items in the Quick Access Toolbar (without having to open Options).

Please make it so that users can click and drag the items in the Quick Access Toolbar to the position that they choose.

    Thanks!

  9. swap

    SWAP
I am frequent user of excel. many time I'll face the problem during changing/ bringing rows front and bottom and vice versa.
if you provided the swap option it will be very helpful for the quick finish of work.
and also provide some shortcuts to that, so that it made more accessible.

  10. Workbook level calculation

We need the ability to calculate a single workbook when multiple workbooks are open.
When working with multiple large slow workbooks which are often not even linked together (think multiple versions of the same workbook or a large mostly static workbook being referenced by a smaller rapidly changing workbook) you want to make changes and recalculate without globally recalculating all open workbooks.
    This should be implemented as
    a) New calculation setting (persistent) - Calculate Active Workbook Only - works for Automatic and Manual F9, but Ctrl/Alt/F9 would full calculate all open workbooks regardless of the setting.
    Automatic Calc in Active…

Thanks for the post Charles, and for the in person conversation at the latest MVP conference. We definitely understand the ask and will keep our eye on it – it looks like it’s moving up the vote charts pretty quickly. As always, keep upvoting the things you are about most.

    Best,
    John [MS XL]

  11. Calculate Selection

If you go to "FORMULAS/Calculation Options/Manual". Once manual is selected, there are only two options for calculations
    1. Calculate Now: For all sheets in a spreadsheet
    2. Calculate Sheet: for a single Sheet

I suggest "Calculate Selection". This will be a smaller subset than "Calculate Sheet" that will only focus on the cells selected.

I work with very large files (~40MB+ if saved as xlsb) and very often I have to work on manual calculation mode to be able to handle the data. Once I am ready I use "Calculate Sheet" to speed the process, but speed is an issue…

  12. Not having services in the background running from Office to waste my ram would be nice.

Not having services in the background running from Office to waste my ram would be nice. since its always needed to run in the background to run my software faster. which i dislike it running always in the background, even more when i am gaming and i want all my usage focused where it should be and not unwanted running services doing nothing but being spyware.

  13. Implement Nvidia CUDA Parallel processing to decrease processing times on Nvidia powered machines

I am not entirely sure how this would be preformed but I have seen examples of excel using the processing power of a GPU to massively decrease calculation times when working with functions that can take advantage of the parallel processing that the GPU is capable off.

  14. Cancel button for accidental performance-hungry actions

Sometimes, due to haste, fat fingers or not thinking something through, I make a request in error.

For instance, I accidentally copy and paste the wrong thing or into the wrong place.

Often, this will be a perfomance-hungry action that I know will cause Excel to hang or crash.

Would be great to be able to hit a button to tell it to stop what it's doing and forget all about it.

  15. Filtering should not recalculate the filtered range

This also applies to row/column hiding/unhiding and unfiltering. Excel should recalculate only the formulas that use SUBTOTAL on the range whose cells' visibility is being changed.

This is a major performance issue when the filtered range has many dependents. The performance decrease is also unjustified when SUBTOTAL is not even used.

  16. Make a noise when long calculations complete

Make a noise when a long calculation completes. This way we can work in another window while the "Calculating 20 processor(s): % creeps up".

  17. What-if Data Table calc should use multi-threading

Calculation Performance of iterative what-if Data Tables is unnecessarily slow. The reasons seem to be (in priority sequence):
    - each iteration is using single-threaded recalculation rather than multi-threaded
    - the overhead for the whole table calculation looks larger than it should be
    - the process starts with a recalc, then does each iteration, then ends with a recalc: the first recalc is unnecessary
    - if the values to be used in one of the iterations are the same as the start values the recalc for that set of values could be skipped

Many thanks to Charles for taking the time to analyze this in such detail and start the discussion about improving the efficiency of data tables. Please vote for this issue if it’s important to you so we can prioritize it appropriately.

    Thanks,
    Steve (MS Excel)

  18. Better use of my processor's cores.

When I look at my task manager, Excel is usually only using approximately 14% of my CPU. I work with huge spreadsheets that take a long time to calculate. Why doesn't Excel use my idle processor cores / threads?

  19. Fix the scrolling issue in 365

Currently when I using a mouse wheel to scroll down any excel charts, the page scrolls down in leaps instead of tiny increments. Changing the scrolling to progress down the page in tinier increments will provide users a much smoother experience. The current scrolling is problematic, because when scrolling through large cells the page appears to 'jump' down or up very quickly and it is hard to keep track of whether you have missed a cell. It is not possible to smoothly scroll from the top of an excel sheet to the bottom because it is so jumpy. This also…

  20. Short-circuit evaluation for AND and OR

If any argument of AND is FALSE, then AND is FALSE; no need for further evaluation.
If any argument of OR is TRUE, then OR is TRUE; no need for further evaluation.
However, the arguments of AND and OR always evaluate fully, which wastes calculation time and computer power.

The current workaround, which sacrifices clarity, is to write AND(a,b,c) as IF(a,IF(b,c)) and OR(a,b,c) as IF(a,TRUE,IF(b,TRUE,c)), since IF skips the evaluation of the branch not taken.

The only time that the change to short-circuit evaluation would not be desirable is in a case such as AND(something,UDF()), where UDF() is a UDF…
