Remove the lock symbols from the tabs of protected sheets
Microsoft appears to have added this as a new 'feature' in Version 2006 (Build 13001.20266 Click-to-Run) and it's a disaster. For a workbook with a large number of protected sheets the visibility of sheet tabs is reduced by ~ 30%, thereby greatly reducing user-friendliness and the ability to navigate around the workbook using sheet tabs.
I've attached a screen grab of a basic model containing protected sheets which has lost visibility of at least 3 sheet tabs as a result of the unnecessary and unwanted lock symbols on almost every sheet.
This 'feature' needs to be removed or made optional and OFF by default.
Hi All, We apologize for being slow to engage on this thread. We are listening to your feedback and we really do care. After reading the comments here as well as the feedback sent from within Excel, we have decided to remove the lock icon from Excel on Windows for the time-being. Since it’s not new to the other platforms (web, Mac and mobile) and we haven’t had similar feedback about it there, we won’t change those for now. We’ll consider how best to get consistency across the desktop, web, and mobile apps, and we’ll share updates if we have any additional next steps.
We appreciate all the suggestions for alternative ways of indicating that a sheet is protected, and will take them into account.
Thanks for all your feedback.

I was very disappointed to see this in the latest Office release. Working with workbooks with many sheet locked it is a massive timesaver to see if the sheet is locked before trying to edit and to be able to check the requisite locks are in place prior to closing an edit.
The display of the padlock symbol should have been moved to an option
Please re-introduce this as an option. Using worksheets with many tabs, I want to be able to quickly check which ones are protected.
I need the lock symbol. It saves so much time knowing which sheets are protected and which aren't. Now I have to right click on each of them (there are many) and make sure they are locked before I send out.
Nooooooooooo Please bring the lock symbol back!!! Or please give us the option to use the symbol or not!
I liked the locked icon on the excel tabs. I guess others did not. Maybe you can add it as an option.
Please, bring the lock symbol back.
A month ago I sah in Excel at the bottum of the page by the tabs a lock, when I had secured the worksheet.
Now that lock is away.
I understand that this symbol is removed and I don't like that. It was very easy for me in a document with a lot of tabs. In one glance I could see, if the tabs were secured.
Perhaps it can be made optional, so that everyone can choose.
I liked the lock symbol. I would prefer a switch to turn the option on/off
I preferred the lock symbol, and I frequently use workbooks with multiple tabs. I lock them to prevent someone else (a novice) from altering the formulas, thereby ensuring the workbook integrity. I have a good memory of how many worksheets are in my respective workbook, and therefore have no problem finding them with the navigational tools already provided. While an option would be nice in the next release (to accommodate those who don't want to use navigational tools, as well as people like me), I would advocate to bring back the icon if MS decides not to provide the option.
What a shame - please bring symbol back
Please bring the symbol back.

It should be common sense to make this lock as an option ON or OFF.
That can´t be hard to do for Microsoft!
I expect it to be working again NEXT WEEK, so I get the good visuell lock function back again.
BUT PLEASE, make it simple!
One good idea can be to make a colored and tagged frame around the unlocked like this _ _ _ _ _ ?
Then it will be clearly visible and will not be a space problem if you chose to use the function or not!

If anyone wants a quick and easy way to get a symbol on their worksheets, you can look at the blog post here with instructions on how to get it back (in a limited fashion)
Can we please get the padlock back

The complaints for the icon are pretty silly. The symbol does not take up much space & the benefits of being able to quickly look to see which tabs are locked vastly outweigh any minor, esthetic inconvenience. The majority of Excel users in a professional setting will have spreadsheets with enough tabs to not all appear one one screen, regardless of the presence of a lock symbol.
Perhaps a better solution than removing this feature would be to educate Mr. Hutchens on how to scroll left & right to view additional tabs.
Please bring back the padlock icon, it was a very useful feature.

Hi! Please give us the option to use the symbol or not. Was very helpful for me!
Please bring back the lock symbol as an option
I'ld really like some kind of notice. Why not change the tab text color? As you can choose the background colors yourself this option needs to be intelligent. But i really miss the lock icon.
I also found the lock symbol very helpful, please make it an option.
