Option to set or disable 'automatic format priority'
I'd love an option to either order my 'default format' or disable automatic formatting. I'm an engineer and routinely use Excel for calculations, lists, and other uses. I frequently have to insert data as fractions or thread sizes. Every time I do, it defaults to the date, and changes the data I actually inserted. The workaround is to set all the cells to whichever format you want BEFORE entering data, but that defeats the purpose of automatic formatting.
For example, if I enter the fraction 1/4, it defaults to '4-Jan', and then I change the format to fraction or number, and instead of '1/4' or '0.25', I get 42739. And for a the ***** thread size '1/4-20', I get 43834, unless I format before entering data or pasting data. I understand that Excel is geared towards users that use dates more than fractions, but it's frustrating that there isn't an option to either turn off automatic formatting or set up for each user which format type should take priority. I assume I speak for most engineers when I say I use numbers and fractions far more often than I use dates.
At least allow the search and replace feature's format setting to override the automatic change cell to date format. Maybe add a lock feature on the text format, so when we set a cell to text to keep our correct numbers we can lock it and keep the auto update from changing the setting we just set. I mean really, there are probably a million ways to keep this functionality but not allow it to override every manual format setting a user makes. It is just absurd how little thought was put in to this feature.
