Merge Cells - Allow User to Change the Default Merge Cells Format
Instead of always merging AND centering, I would rather it maintain the formatting of the original cell that contains the data. More often than not, if the original cell is formatted as left justified prior to merging then I want it left justified after the merge as well.
If this isn't possible, then at least allow me to change what it defaults to in the home excel options as well as give me more standard options to choose from. Or allow me to create my own combinations of merge and format combinations to default to.
We’ve got this in Excel today! :-)
Instead of hitting “Merge & Center” on the ribbon, click the drop down arrow beside it and choose “Merge Cells.”

I don't work for MS, but...you can customize your ribbon and add the Merge Cells or Merge Across option (or whichever one works best) but you cannot remove the Merge & Center default. Here's what I did:
Go to the Excel Options, Customize Ribbon. Change the "Choose commands from" to ALL COMMANDS. Next, create a custom tab or group on the left side by clicking "New Tab" (or group) and giving it a name. Now, start moving all the stuff you do on a regular basis to your custom tab or group.
Hope this helps! I know it sure will help me! :)
Disgraceful that after all this time nothing has been done to address this request. It's patently obvious that combining two heterogenous actions into one button will cost time to those who only wish to perform the first of the two actions combined. It's absurd that MS cannot understand such simple issues.
Thanks for the workaround, Andy. This much easier than clicking the drop-down or reformatting after every Merge & Center. This misunderstanding of this by MS is odd.

In response to Andy's workaround:
I do not see that this is possible in Office 2007. I realize that I'm on an 11 year old platform, but it's what my company gave me to work with.
Matt [Google will always be better]
One can add it to the quick access toolbar but that's about it.
Just found a bit of a quick work around...
In the customize the ribbon section of the Excel options, add a new group to the Alignment section.
Then into this new group, add the Merge Cells function found under the home tab > alignment section in the left panel.
This adds a button for you right next to the alignment group, thus enabling you to do your merge normal with a single click.
I agree with the comments and not the 'already supported' claim.
We would like to change the default option to make 'merge cells' the default option rather than 'merge and center' hence making a more commonly used task a one-click rather than a two-click operation.
All it would take is allowing users to use the 'move up' and 'move down' functions in the 'customize the ribbon' Excel options.
Um, Dear Dan, this is not currently available.
We want to change the default button option. "Merge & Center" is the top option and the only one available with one click. I use "Merge Across" WAY more than "Merge & Center", and would much rather have it available as my default one click option.
Yes, I can add it to my Quick Access, which I do but consider this ability to set a default for Merge the same as how Pivot Table defaults options were built out last year.
Agree with most comments that the default option should be simply "Merge" and not "Merge & Center". Being able to set the default option would be best solution. When working through a large spreadsheet it wastes a ton of time having to either click through to get the desired selection or reformatting. To get around this I have created a macro assigned to <Ctrl>"M" just to get around.
I also wish I could change the default option to be Merge Across instead of Merge & Center. I can't be hard to allow for sorting in the Customize Ribbon screen similar to how you rearrange the order of the main groupings in the ribbon. Then both set of users would be happy; those that want Merge Across to be shown on the ribbon would just need to change the ordering in the Customize Ribbon screen and be done with it.
This is NOT already supported. Users would like to change the default of the drop down.

I so agree with the request .... Merge & Center is two action and assumes you want to remove-delete the existing formatting. No, make the default just that MERGE, and reduce the waste of 3 steps - Merge Button - Scroll Down - And Select.

Understood, but we want to change the default options, so we won't have to click on the drop down menu
Pressing the drop down arrow doubles the number of clicks needed to perform a merge if you always need to "Merge Across". Very inefficent.
Would be much better to let users customise the ribbon fully, rather than needing to create custom groups for commands.
I'd def prefer my first and default option to be simply 'Merge' as I NEVER retain the center alignment. Am I in a minority here? If so and MOST users retain the center alignment, then fair enough, but if most of us choose Merge & Center, followed by Left alignment (or alternatively, use the same number of clicks but open the dropdown and choose Merge Cells) then maybe making 'Merge' the default would be better. It does infuriate me to have to do that extra action of going to the dropdown arrow to find Merge Cells just to retain the alignment I had already previously set.
