Lock or protect formatting
It would be good to be able to lock or protect the formatting of cells (including columns, rows and ranges) so that the format is preserved by default when data is pasted in.
Also, this could be used to prevent Styles from overriding customised formatting of sheets and charts.
This doesn't have to be password protected - just a safeguard against accidental changes.

Not being able to lock the formatting is annoying, to say the least - this would be an excellent feature!
Yes please! I already have a workbook with formatting protected, but it nevertheless changes the formatting when data is pasted in from another workbook. Silly.

Hope you all can vote for that.
I have a validated spreadsheet used for active drug release profiles. It uses the data validation feature to make sure users aren't inputting data types they shouldn't be. A useful feature that is made redundant by the fact that if the user pastes data in from another spreadsheet the data validation is erased.
Yes! Most needed!
If you ever had to build workbooks to be used by others you need (desperately) to disable users from changing cell formatting (including, contents format like currency, date , number, but also borders, fill, colors, conditional for mating, etc..).
Today, to prevent users from pasting everything (not only values or formulas) on unlocked cells we have to build-up (very) complicated macros. Almost impossible!
Allow me to suggest a solution:
Suggestion is to add an option to the protect sheet window which would disable all format changes, either manually or via any paste operation, whenever the sheet is protected. Disabling means any user interaction would be performed, but keeping cell formats unchanged.
The current cell protection scheme does not enable protecting formats on unprotected cells.

I think this is an excellent idea. I work with financial information. Somehow, a lot of CURRENCY FORMATS get converted to DATE FORMAT when I copied and paste information (from a website). So, I am continuously restoring the CURRENCY FORMAT OR DOLLARS FORMAT.
