  1. Add Get Parameter button to Power Query and avoid Privacy / Formula.Firewall problems

It's fantastic that you can pick up named ranges in Excel and pass them to Power Query as parameters. However the process is cumbersome and often results in Formula.Firewall warnings or other issues.

This leads to having to switch Privacy Levels to "Ignore" or having to write a query within a query rather than nice and clean "parameter" queries.

It would really simplify things if we could quickly create parameter queries (including a drop down to select parameter type) and that these queries would be immune from the Privacy warnings.

  2. Be able to protect Power Query with password

Now any user can edit and change Power Query connections, it would be very interesting to be able to protect Power Queries with a password.

    Thanks

    Hi Joana & others,

Thanks for logging this suggestion. Yes, being able to protect your queries would be quite useful indeed for delivering solutions. We’ll prioritize this based on the interest, so if you’re reading this and haven’t voted as yet, please do so.

  3. Allow interaction with Excel while in Power Query

Please make the Power Query editor window (Get Data) non-model. When building complex queries, we often need to go back to Excel to change a worksheet and look at data. Right now, the Power Query editor window takes control over the application, preventing interaction with Excel.

The current behaviour makes it very difficult to do things like the following:
-Mid query, go back and check a worksheet to see exactly what a cell value may be that you want to refer to
-When we have a static table in Excel and are trying to build a query that lands an…

  4. Add a Reporting Ribbon to Excel to consolidate and highlight the amazing capabilities of Power Query and Power Pivot

Tables, Power Query, Power Pivot and Pivot Tables are amazing tools that will transform the way people build their reports, but only once they know about them!

Let's SHOUT about how good these things are and how well they work together by putting them onto a single new Ribbon called "Reporting" - something like the attached image.

  5. Add "Run R Script" option to Excel 2016 and Excel 2013 "Power Query" add-in, as it is for Power BI.

In July 2016, a "Run R Script" option was added to Power BI Desktop. This option would be a huge benefit to have in Excel 2016 and Excel 2013 Power Query add-in also.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for your passion around this. We’ve been discussing this item off and on for some time now and we’d love to get your input.

The reason we’ve resisted this is because the R runtime & various packages (and updating their versions) aren’t straightforward for other users to install. This limits sharing such queries across a workgroup.

    What do you think?

For others reading this that’d like us to prioritize this work, please be sure to add your vote since we’re prioritizing our backlog based on these.

    thanks

WE NEED! Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) in combination with the Step-by-Step Mail Merge Wizard in Word. Formatting columns as text to make this work correctly (ie, Zip + 4) is ridiculous!

  7. Add Power BI Dataflows as a data source in "Get & Transform Data"

Please add Power BI Dataflows as a data source so that I can import data from a Dataflow into the local spreadsheet/data model.

  8. Add a setting/option where all CSV/delimited files are opened as "Text"

    Add a setting called
"Open text-delimited files (CSV, etc) as text only, with no type inference."

When this setting is active, then every column's format will be "Text" when a CSV or other such file is opened, so that the initial view is exactly the text represented in the CSV.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Can you comment on whether you expect this to basically import all the lines as text to column A, or if you have some other expectation?

Also, I’m assuming people refer here to the file/open path, and not to the Data/From-Text or New-Query/From-Text path.

  9. Default the Power Query formula bar as on

In the Power Query editor window the formula bar is defaulted as off. This is the first thing I tell people to turn on as it’s key to avoiding unintended errors and future proofing your code.

As Gil Raviv says in his book, “ Enabling the formula bar is fundamental to avoid the pitfalls”

Thanks for logging this suggestion, Terry. This is a frequently asked requests, as evidenced by the number of votes on the article Ken linked to on the Power BI user voice site.

We’re looking at this one, and in the meantime more votes would help us prioritize this work higher.

  12. Add support for custom data connectors (Power Query M extensions)

Custom Data Connectors mechanism is being developed by Power BI Desktop team:

Excel's Get & Transform engine (Power Query) should have support for .mez/.pqx extensions too.

  13. Show Tables in Power Query when opening an xlsb file

When using Power Query / Get Data to open .xlsx files and .xlsm files, the Tables present in those files are shown in a list.
When opening a .xlsb file only Sheets are shown and not any of the Tables present within the file.

If there is only one table on a sheet, AND it starts in cell A1, then it is relatively easy to still load the data, but where there are multiple tables per sheet, OR the tables don't start in A1, then there is a lot of unnecessary work deleting Rows and or Columns to obtain your…

  14. Harmonize Excel.CurrentWorkbook with Excel.Workbook

Please adjust the M-function "Excel.CurrentWorkbook" so that it returns the same items (in the same structure) than Excel.Workbook (in connection with File.Contents) does:

Returning a table view of all elements with helpful columns like "Kind".

But most importantly also returning content from sheets that isn't in a special format like Table or Defined Name but in a simple range.

There are multiple reasons for letting the source-data untouched but also performing transactions on them and I've come across this request very often. The workarounds are pretty painful (error-prone and need to save file before being able to access data).

    Thanks…

  15. If pasted text is auto converted to a date: _save_the_original_text_. Then give it back when text is desired. Don't corrupt data!

When people in computational biology paste a list of gene names sometimes genes like "SPET8" are in the list. The original value is lost, and now the column has corrupt data. (Why did you kill the original value?) Since the column of gene names usually goes off screen and is often in alphabetical order nobody notices this until something breaks in a bizarre way in another person's hands. Scientific papers have had corrupt data for this reason many times, and everyone advises each other to avoid excel for this reason. It might even make a difference for a clinical diagnosis.…

  16. turn off automatic date conversion

Opening scientific data in excel for review or analysis purposes is a nightmare in Excel. Some values, gene names and other text automatically transforms into dates and then the data is corrupted. Changing cell format in this case corrupts the data even further and there's no way to return to the original value/text, since the data corrupts when opening the file. This is the worst functionality in Excel and I don't know anyone who benefits from the automatic transformation of dates. Please the date transformation optional setting for those who might need it!

  17. Power Query data from "This Excel Workbook" - Do not break Query if this file name or path changes!

If you want to have a self-contained file where your data is entered not in table format, but you want to get it INTO a table via PowerQuery, you can currently PowerQuery on the same file via ""From File" and turn it into a table and bring it into that same workbook. But the problem is that now you:
    1) Have to save every time before you refresh the query.
    2) Cannot change the name of the file or where it is saved without breaking the query.
    I believe there's a workaround for #2 involving setting up a parameters table…

  18. Add Dividend Data to Stock Data Type

It would be helpful to include the dividend amount per share and ex-dividend date with the stock data type.

  19. Add Fiscal Month and Fiscal Year to the Query Editor "Add Column " Date Button

The Query Editor allows you to easily create Year, Month, Month Name etc, but many people need Fiscal Month Number and Fiscal year

  20. Add short month name and short day name in Power Query

In Power Query, you can convert a date in year, month, day, first day of the month, day of the week, .... You can also convert a date in month name or in day name.

But there is no option to convert a date with the short name (Jan, Feb, Mar, ...) and the same for the day (Mon, Tue, Wed, ...)

Is it possible to add these options on the ribbon?
