  1. Preserve source quoting and separator when saving CSV.

Currently, Excel alters CSV files to it's internal CSV format whenever the file is saved, even if no changes were made to the file. For example, if I open a CSV file like below (anonymized version of a AWS credentials file):

User Name,Access Key Id,Secret Access Key
    "somebody",WISKFHEYDSJ2UDFH6XAD,mDHJNSLCF!safsdlds>Flsdfj/Mjufsldkhafdsl

And then I merely open the file and save it without making any changes, Excel will alter file, removing the quotes:

User Name,Access Key Id,Secret Access Key
    somebody,WISKFHEYDSJ2UDFH6XAD,mDHJNSLCF!safsdlds>Flsdfj/Mjufsldkhafdsl

In this particular example, the change is harmless but for more complex CSV files, simply opening them in Excel is sufficient to break other…

Great suggestion – CSV hasn’t been an area we’ve been looking into recently, but we’ll reconsider. It looks like this is starting to get some votes fairly quickly. If you like the idea, then please keep the votes coming! That’s the best way to help get this onto our engineering schedule.

    Thanks,

  2. Don't add "copy of" to file name in save as dialog

When I save my file with a new name "Save As" it always adds "Copy of " to the file name. I don't always catch this because it's not expected behaviour, and that part of the UI is quite busy.

I never want to add a prefix to the file name automatically, it breaks file sorting and I can't find the new file.

I'm usually just saving the file as the next revision.

  3. PLEASE Allow the pinned items to sort alphabetically!

PLEASE Allow the pinned items to sort alphabetically! I do not understand the logic of last opened date on pinned files because files that are pinned are not sorting that way either. Not having the ability to know where the pinned item ends up is not efficient since I can look for last opened files below. PLEASE revert to the 2013 method or make this a selectable option in settings.

  4. Eliminate the new "Save your changes to this file?" dialog box

In the last week, whenever I close down a new Excel file without saving it, a new dialog box appears asking "Save changes to this file?". Whereas previously I could use keyboard shortcuts to immediately close down a file (Ctrl-F4, N), this no longer works. Instead, the new box interprets the "N" keypress as something to be entered into the "File Name" text field.

  5. Autosort the document recovery pane by date (descending)

The document recovery window can really be a life saver, but it can also be extremely frustrating. However the fix for this seems like it would be mind-numbingly easy for one of your office developers.

Please update the document recovery view so the files are sorted from most recent to oldest in the window. Today there is absolutely no logic to how the files appear in this window, and trying to find documents that I've worked with today can take a while if you aren't always clearing your recovery pane. I generally don't erase my recovery pane, in case I…

  6. Excel Misinterpreting CSV as SYLK file.

When opening a CSV file in Excel where the first field is "ID", Excel gives a dialog saying the extension does not match the file type (Excel assuming the file type to be SYLK). I have had to make a change to my codebase to change "ID" to "_ID" specifically for users who utilize Excel. I would appreciate a fix ASAP.

  8. Warn users when they will lose formatting saving to CSV

I know a lot of people hated the warning when saving a workbook as CSV. Now that the warning has been removed, if you open a CSV file, make formatting changes and save the file - the formatting is lost with no warning at all.

  9. Disable option for new auto-save feature in Office 365 version 1707.

Please add a kill switch in the menu options for the new 'auto-save' feature. I absolutely hate the fact that this is enabled on all files stored on the cloud by default; it causes the timestamp on archived OneDrive and SharePoint workbooks to change to today's date immediately upon opening, which makes it look like something was changed after the fact. This has a huge impact on organizational reporting and I'm surprised that no one else is raising **** about it yet. This is causing me an awful lot of trouble, to the point where I am trying to figure…

  10. Release memory after large workbook is closed

Excel does not appear to release all memory previously used when large workbooks were open, thus limiting the number/size of workbooks that can be subsequently opened in that instance of Excel. If a passenger gets off the bus, the seat immediately becomes free for someone else - do the same in Excel!

  11. "TIME TRAVEL" FEATURE.

Excel To include with time travel feature. This will facilitate to access back the file even if saved for erroneous data which will enable to access file for previous times status like 5min, 10min, 15min etc. back or before. In this way even file saved with heavy mistakes can be retrieved back to previous status and can be utilised for further work without redoing as whole. It is like restore to some known good configuration as in windows registry.

  12. Use ISO8601 when exporting dates to CSV files

When exporting to a CSV file, it would be best to export dates in ISO8601 format (or a specific date format if the user has set one). CSV is about making things machine readable and this avoids the ambiguity of American vs British date formats. I regularly deal with local councils and they will export a CSV file from Excel and then be very confused as to why the date format has changed when they've explicitly set it. If you can't preserve their chosen format, please default to ISO8601 to reduce headaches.

  13. Increase the file path length to more than 218 characters

Incresaing the character count in the file path matching with Excel online would be fitting. Or even more. It seems crazy that Excel can't open a valid file that the filesystem allows. People have been complaining about this since Office 2000. The thread below has over 11 thousand views and there are plenty others. Please fix this.

  15. Pin frequently used folders in excel

In previous versions of Office, you could pin frequently used folders in excel. 2016 it cannot be done. Can you bring it back?

  16. Auto Save

The new "Auto-Save" function is a good idea but there should be an option for the user to set the default. I would prefer that it is defaulted to OFF.

I often do what ifs that I dont want to save and having to remember to turn it off each time is a pain.

Additionally, it updates the time stamp of when it was last saved. This is also misleading if you just open a file to look at and later you think the file was modified from the last time you actually changed anything.

    I would suggest to change…

  17. xls and xlsx files are not defaulted as Excel files in Windows 10

In Windows 10, xls and xlsx files are not automatically associated to Excel. If you try to open an xls or xlsx file from windows explorer, it open a save as windo rather than booting and opening in Excel.

  18. Stop asking to save changes if nothing has changed

You open and Excel file and look at it for a moment then click Close. Excel pops up a dialog "Want to save your changes?". I didn't change anything! Please stop asking to save changes when nothing has changed. It confuses the user.

This is made worse if I've has that spreadsheet open for a long time and I don't remember if I changed it or not. Or worse, there may be other people working on the same file and if I say "Save", I overwrite their changes.

I heard that this has to do with Excel saving the current…

  19. Bring back easy "Open file" window

Please, please, please bring back the the easy "Open File" window from the old versions of Excel and Word. I would love to have the browser window open immediately instead if this ridiculous jumping through hoops to get to the browser window.

  20. Option of opening new file in current instance or new instance (dual monitor support)

When a file is opened it automatically opens in the same instance which does not allow you to have two workbooks side by side on two monitors (without manually dragging the excel window across two monitors every time).

I know you can manually open a new instance of excel but when opening a file it seems to randomly choose which instance it opens in, sometimes both files are in the same instance which is useless for what is needed.

Manually finding the file through the open command it not useful either due to large numbers of files being from outlook…
