  1. Power Query - cache shared nodes

Update Power Query in Excel to take advantage of caching in cases where a parent node refers to a child node that has already been refreshed (as exists in Power BI desktop today).

This issue creates significant performance problems with refresh times when creating highly interdependent financial and operational models. This is a show stopper from a usability and customer acceptance standpoint.

    • Workbook level calculation

We need the ability to calculate a single workbook when multiple workbooks are open.
When working with multiple large slow workbooks which are often not even linked together (think multiple versions of the same workbook or a large mostly static workbook being referenced by a smaller rapidly changing workbook) you want to make changes and recalculate without globally recalculating all open workbooks.
      This should be implemented as
      a) New calculation setting (persistent) - Calculate Active Workbook Only - works for Automatic and Manual F9, but Ctrl/Alt/F9 would full calculate all open workbooks regardless of the setting.
      Automatic Calc in Active…

Thanks for the post Charles, and for the in person conversation at the latest MVP conference. We definitely understand the ask and will keep our eye on it – it looks like it’s moving up the vote charts pretty quickly. As always, keep upvoting the things you are about most.

        Best,
        John [MS XL]

      • What-if Data Table calc should use multi-threading

Calculation Performance of iterative what-if Data Tables is unnecessarily slow. The reasons seem to be (in priority sequence):
        - each iteration is using single-threaded recalculation rather than multi-threaded
        - the overhead for the whole table calculation looks larger than it should be
        - the process starts with a recalc, then does each iteration, then ends with a recalc: the first recalc is unnecessary
        - if the values to be used in one of the iterations are the same as the start values the recalc for that set of values could be skipped

Many thanks to Charles for taking the time to analyze this in such detail and start the discussion about improving the efficiency of data tables. Please vote for this issue if it’s important to you so we can prioritize it appropriately.

          Thanks,
          Steve (MS Excel)

        • "Blank" option to the top of the excel filter options

Is there a way to bring the "Blank" option to the top of the excel filter options as it is shown in the picture below.

In 2010 version of the excel the "Blank" was on the top by default but it went back to the bottom of the list in the next revisions.

          • Create a 64-bit version of Excel

Computer hardware and operating systems have been 64-bit for over a decade. Excel (and Office) still run as 32-bit applications, unless one goes out of their way to install 64-bit.

Can you make changes to Excel necessary to recommend 64-bit as the default?

(2016-05-10 Dan [MS] - added this idea to break out the 64-bit portion of this existing idea, since we've added the ability for 32-bit to address more memory: https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921-excel-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/13522164-increase-usable-memory-or-switch-to-64-bit-excel-a )

            • Need a better distinction between "long calculation" and "frozen/crashed"

There are calculations so large and long that Excel is unresponsive until they are done. It will say something like "Book1 - Excel (Not Responding)" in the title bar. The GUI will not update and will fade if you try to click in it with your "hourglass" cursor.

If I didn't know any better (and I used to not know any better), I would assume that Excel was frozen and just kill the process and lose all of my saved work. But it isn't frozen. It's just taking a very long time. This should be made clear to the user…

              • Form control scroll bar bug

With large Excel models, when a variable is linked to Form controls such as a sliders (e.g. for a dashboard), the slider can start moving of its own accord even if the user has only clicked once. Please can you fix this bug.

                • Short-circuit evaluation for AND and OR

If any argument of AND is FALSE, then AND is FALSE; no need for further evaluation.
If any argument of OR is TRUE, then OR is TRUE; no need for further evaluation.
However, the arguments of AND and OR always evaluate fully, which wastes calculation time and computer power.

The current workaround, which sacrifices clarity, is to write AND(a,b,c) as IF(a,IF(b,c)) and OR(a,b,c) as IF(a,TRUE,IF(b,TRUE,c)), since IF skips the evaluation of the branch not taken.

The only time that the change to short-circuit evaluation would not be desirable is in a case such as AND(something,UDF()), where UDF() is a UDF…

Please make it so that users can click and drag the items in the Quick Access Toolbar to the position that they choose.

                    • Allow user to create multiple customized toolbars

Excel 2003 and prior had a wonderful feature - they allowed a user to create multiple customized toolbars with custom icons picked from a selection library or created in an image editor.

Pity Microsoft did away with that feature and replaced it with the disaster that they call a ribbon. It is sub-optimal for a power user and takes up too much screen space on a laptop.

Bring back the multiple customizable toolbars and keep the Excel 2010 feature that allows you to export the customization to a file and import on another Excel 2010 installation.

                      • Implement Nvidia CUDA Parallel processing to decrease processing times on Nvidia powered machines

I am not entirely sure how this would be preformed but I have seen examples of excel using the processing power of a GPU to massively decrease calculation times when working with functions that can take advantage of the parallel processing that the GPU is capable off.

                        • Background colors for ribbon and QA toolbar

The QA toolbar and the Ribbon need separate color controls. The themes wipe out all of the colors normally on each icon making them all look the same and hard to distinguish. Only fixable with the White theme but then the ribbon runs into the rest of the document. Needs a contrast!

When Excel is calculating, we currently see something like "Calculating (4 processors): 99%" in the status bar. "Time remaining" would be useful as well.

There should be an option to close out of error messages. When one comes up, there are OK, Cancel, and X buttons. Clicking any of them will open the same message again. The only way to get out of it is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and close Excel through the task manager.

                                • Fix the scrolling issue in 365

Currently when I using a mouse wheel to scroll down any excel charts, the page scrolls down in leaps instead of tiny increments. Changing the scrolling to progress down the page in tinier increments will provide users a much smoother experience. The current scrolling is problematic, because when scrolling through large cells the page appears to 'jump' down or up very quickly and it is hard to keep track of whether you have missed a cell. It is not possible to smoothly scroll from the top of an excel sheet to the bottom because it is so jumpy. This also…

                                  • Indicator on file icon for files on sharepoint that are booked out. (Excel especially, for administrative maintanance.)

The idea is to see which files are locked by online users who are busy working on files (Excel specifically).
This means that there should be an indicator on the file icon in the browser, that works the same as the sync feature (the animated circling arrows that shows a file is in the process of being uploaded/synced).
This will make choosing a file for editing (maintanance) easier using Excel offline.

                                      • Better use of my processor's cores.

When I look at my task manager, Excel is usually only using approximately 14% of my CPU. I work with huge spreadsheets that take a long time to calculate. Why doesn't Excel use my idle processor cores / threads?

                                        • 7.8 MB Workbook takes 100 secs to open

                                          I'm running:
                                          HW
Lenovo T550, 16 GB Mem, 500 GB SSD
                                          Intel Core i5-5300U CPU @ 2.30-2.90 GHz
                                          Dual Core + HyperThreading ==> 4 CPUs
No a numbercruncher but not too bad either...

                                          SW
                                          Win10 x64 (upgraded from Win8.1)

                                          German UI

                                          I got a workbook (100secsToOpenLOyes.xlsx) with ~600 sheets and ~4100 ListObjects.
It takes ~100 sec in avg to open which I consider to be tooooo long.
                                          File is stored on SSD.
While opening 1 CPU is running at 100%

The corresponding file (100secsToOpenLOno.xlsx) with unlisted ListObjects is, of course, a bit smaller (5.4 MB) and…
