  1. Engineering Notation

In engineering, it is very common to use scientific notation that only displays numbers in factors of 10e-6, 10e-3, 10e0, 10e3, 10e6, 10e9, etc. I've seen this called "engineering notation" - it's just a special subset of scientific notation.

It would be great to have an extra formatting option for this.

    For example:
1.3e5 would be displayed as 130.0e3
2.0e6 would be displayed as 2.0e6 (no change)
3.2e10 would be displayed as 32.0e9

  3. Why did you change default Excel document colors from older versions?

Why did you change default Excel document colors from older versions?

When I open up an older file and need to update it, the available default colors for cells, tabs, etc. is different from versions past.

    Why???

This makes it EXTREMELY inconvenient and most ANNOYING when doing changes that we want to make match the documents as we edit them. Right now I'm going through an Excel document and trying to match not less than 10 colors for cells and tabs, making changes in Excel's color selection for future changes to this document's and others' once Excel default colors from…

  4. Conditional formatting suggestion – managing

This worksheet choice should appear first
Whenever I have to check on the conditional formatting and clicking ‘manage rules’, the first thing that comes up is the Current selection for the formatting rules. I think it should be ‘this worksheet’.

  5. Drop Down List

How about making the drop down list show more than 10 items at a time without having to scroll? Many years ago when using Excel for Mac, the drop down list would run the length of the screen. Not sure if this was a feature specific to Mac, but it would make using drop down lists a lot more useful on a PC.

  6. Allow us to customise the "right-click menu option"

We are already able to customise the ribbon menus. It would be great if we could also customise the right-click menu options. In particular the following would be useful:

    • Conditional formatting

    • Styles

However, add these may make it too cluttered for some users, so it would be great if you could choose what items are shown.

  7. 'No cell overflow' setting

In reports, tables or pivot tables, when the following both conditions are filled:
    - a cell contain text that is longer than the width of the cell, AND
    - the next cell on the row is empty
Then the text of the first cell overflows in the next cell, making reports not presentable.

    Eg:

    Cust Name Jan Feb _Mar

    1 CustomerA $123 $432 $654
    2 CustomerB $876 $676 $365
    3 CustomerC $033 $443 $553
    4 CustomerD ____ $234
    5 Long CustomerE Name $543
    6 CustomerF $876 $676 $365

    row 4 & 5 : customers have no sales in Jan or…

  8. Provide a way to format text as basis points

In the financial world it is common to express percentage values as basis points. Currently there is no way to format a percentage as basis points without multiplying it by 10,000 (which then changes the value and you can't use it in calculations).
Essentially you need to have the effect of entering % in the Custom Format without actually have "%" appear in the cell.

  9. Keep cell formatting when removing hyperlink

When entering an URL in a cell, Excel will automatically add an hyper-link on the text. However clicking "remove hyperlink" will also remove any formatting that we may have set before (colours, borders).

This is extremely annoying when dealing with spreadsheets comporting a lot of URLs. It would be better if removing the hyper-link would keep the initial formatting of the cell. Or at least being able to tell Excel that we do not want to automatically add hyper-links on the cells.

  10. Select protected/unprotected cells

In the menu Home > Find & Select > Go to Special, you have many pretty interest way to select cells (formula, blank, ...)

I would like to add to this tool the option protected and unprotected cells.

  11. Make vertical alignment default to top of cell

If any column has text wrapping applied, top of cell formatting makes data much easier to read, both on screen and printed version (especially if there are no borders)

  12. Change Default Auto Fill Option

Currently Double Clicking the bottom right corner of a cell will Auto Fill down to the last populated row in a data sheet. However in doing so it defaults to 'Fill Series' e.g. 1,2,3,4... it would be great to set the default to, say, 'Copy Cells' e.g. 1,1,1,1...

  13. Case Sensitive Date Format Rules

I wish the cell formatting rules for dates were case sensitive. For example, the rule "MMM" outputs "Jan" instead of "JAN"

  14. Minimum Row Height

I can currently set the row height to be automatic or set it to a fixed height. When working with tables which contain text, this often leads to a mishmash where rows are randomly one, two and sometimes three rows of text tall. This looks sloppy. I can manually review and set the row height for each row, but why should I have to.

I should be able to set the row height to a minimum value. If the row needs to be taller to fully display a cell with wrapped text, then the row height should automagically increase. This…

  15. Right click for conditional formatting

Please add the conditional formatting menu to the options available when you right click a cell.

  16. Moving Tabs

In the activate window when you right click the arrows it lists all the tabs,I would think the ability to rearrange the tab order in that window would be useful. This could be done by drag or highlighting a clicking an arrow.

  17. Bioinformatics: gene names errors

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC459209/bin/1471-2105-5-80-1.jpg

i have recently noticed this while trying to modify a dataset in excel and importing it back into R, which throws the duplicate rowname error (e.g. sep1 and sept1 get automatically formatted into the same values).

this is a really minor nuisance because most of the work is done in R, and maybe it's better addressed by guys at R. i dunno

  18. Ordinal Number Format

How about an option to format as ordinal numbers, similar to what can be done in fields in word with *Ordinal

  19. Tight column fit + wrap text + row autofit = autofit to 1 line more

If you have text in a cell and apply the Wrap Text formatting and then resize the column so that one of the words is close to wrapping onto the next line, then when you autofit the row, the row's height will be as if you have 1 more line than you actually have in the cell.

For example, on a new sheet, if you type "One" (without quotes) in any cell and resize the column to 31 or 32 pixels, then the row will be 2 lines big after autofitting, but "One" still only occupies 1 line. I am…

  20. Prior year assumption in December dates entered in January

Many people enter recent dates into excel to balance bank accounts etc and Excel always assumes the year in dates entered as the current year. This makes everyone not need to type out the year except for about half a month every year.
