This error message don't clearly articulate what the user did wrong or how to avoid doing it again. A more detailed message, or one that uses clear language to define what "exceeded its limits" even means, would provide users with a way to avoid getting this error, over and over, as I have.
What I found when I ran into this problem is that the file was using too much RAM. Our file was 20 MB, which is big for an Excel file, but it was complicated enough that it was using 2GB of RAM! Apparently, that's the limit. The solution is to open it with the Excel desktop application. Then, the RAM limit is just how much RAM your computer has. If you need to do collaborative editing, you'll have to be sure everyone is using the Office 365 desktop applications.
