Access On-Premise cube from Excel Online
We are interested in creating Analytical reports (pivot tables with slicers) with Excel and host in Excel Online against our On-Premise MOLAP and/or Tabular Analysis Services cubes. Looks like to do this with Excel Online, a powerpivot model would need to be in the Excel Workbook. We'd like to create several Analytical reports against the same cube On-Premise (or access a common Power BI dataset).
Today we have Analysis services MOLAP and Tabular models hooked to Analytical reports hosted in Sharepoint 2013 On-Premise. Users can slicer/dice and drilldown.
We are looking for this same functionality in Excel Online. Many of our users leverage this capability.
We are working to improve Excel connectivity to Power BI including connectivity from Excel Online. Power BI does offer gateway servers to enable Power BI connectivity to on-premise data. Excel Online does not currently have plans to build its own gateways, and therefore doesn’t have a way to cross a company’s firewall and reach data that is located in on-premise servers. Bottom line is that databases in the cloud will eventually be reachable from Excel Online, but on-premise data can be accessed only from Power BI, and not from Excel Online.
How are businesses supposed to transition to Sharepoint online if the ability to connect to on-premise data isn't available? We're still on Sharepoint 2013 because of this lack of support, and are looking to alternatives because Microsoft is deciding to no longer support such a good feature of Sharepoint (scheduled data refreshes, and embedded reports).
The amount of tech debt we will have to take on to transition everything to PowerBI will just mean we will stop using Microsoft products for reporting purposes. That's no different than asking us to transition all of our data to SSAS Tabular, and just like tabular, PowerBI isn't a great solution for certain types of reports.

Ideally should allow for connection to PowerBI model as well.
